At nightfall, an ultimate sunbeam is breaking through the horizon to warm up the Colosseum, while a fierce battle of clouds is engaged in the sky...

So many things have already been said about this mythic place on TE, so I have opted to present you some anecdotes and fun facts.

• In any given game, a gladiator faced a 25% chance of death.
• Gladiators who lived into their thirties were rare.
• Ever wondered what happened to all the slaughtered animals? Hungry Roman plebeians did not let good meat go to waste...
• The citizens of Rome loved their games and the Coliseum could seat 50,000 of them.
• The topmost seats were for women of the lower classes and no ticket was required for the gallery, so that to gain a seat here it was necessary to be at the amphitheater before sunrise.
• Great as is the Colosseum, another Roman building, the Circus Maximus, now entirely obliterated, was more than four times as large, and contained seats for 250 000 people.

Hi Andre,
Nice capture, even nicer title : Cloudiators !
Wonderfull pov and great compo. Almost minimalist but great graphical effect.
TFS and best regards
MESUT ILGIM

Hello my friend,
Just come home from work (last day) and just read your words on my latest. Man you are so good in putting down your feelings about an image that my breath got stucked for a moment...a big thank you..!!!
But, don't give me to much credit because look at your own work here. The light and colour treatment is pure magic, it looks wonderful. But also the composition is very refreshing in what we see normally from the Colosseum....very good.
You do not need to become so good as me, you already are..!!!
Take care my friend, i'll mail you back when i got home and maybe along the road in Asia when i have the time and the connection.
Regards, Henk

nice photo, I will come back with a better comment.. now I want just to admire this photo.

Hi Andre,
Rome is wonderfull always, this shot demonstrates it.
Congratulations.
Michelangelo

Hi Andre, A superbly composed photo, the array of beautiful colours in that sky is wonderful, I think you have cropped the Colosseum very well, as to balance both the sky & architecture &, one is not overpowering the other, TFS, kind regards Wilson.

Bravo !

A+

Dominique

Very nice picture, with outstanding colors. though I don't like them when they are too unnatural, here they work just fine...

Bonjour Andre,
Bonne composition..!
Amitié de Bruxelles.
Patrick

Hi Inasia.
Nice shot, very well cropped.
I tried to correct the magenta dominant.
See my WS..
Kind regards.

Salut André

Superbe !

Karine

Great detail of Colosseo taken in a wonderful light condition Andre , colours are very actractive , compliments ,well done.
Stefano.

Love the title ! Great image !

Well done. Best wishes,

A great image and note.

Hi Andre,

Great colors. Well done.
Wonderfull pov and great compo.
Bravo.
Bien amicalement.

Michel

A bientôt
Karine

Hi Andre.

Hahahahahahahaha, excellent title my friend!

Nice POV and colours!

Hi Andre,
This shot is dreamy with those pinky purply clouds and the light just touching on the colosseum. I like that you only chose to show a portion of the building for your composition, and I think it has worked very well. Nicely done! Cool facts.
Best Regards
Wanda

Hi Andre,
a well chosen detail of this magnificent building. Great colours, technically A+. I also like your funny titles, not only on this one.
Compliments, Christian

Andre,

You probably cheated with the colors, but you certainly ended up with a very dramatic photo.

What was the incentive for the gladiators to take such a risk? Religion- that always works. I wonder where these “facts” come from. Folklore?

I’m having a little trouble with seating for 360,000. (You must get the attendance figures from the marketing department.) The roads to the stadium must have been worse than the New Jersey Turnpike. :-))

Anyway, I like the photo and your note, nonetheless.

Randy

A: great play on words, amazing light and an fine image. This is a fine collage. more later, my friend, regards, c

JY

Hello Andre!
Beautiful detail and fantastic sky here!
Great colours and perfect light!
Excellent perspective!
Best regards!
Lili

...I return... :)

Hello Andre,
amazing shot with this sky adding such a great feeling to the magic of the place. The light has been so well managed that did allow you to deliver one of the most beautiful shot of the Colosseum.
Thank you for sharing it
Regards

Igor

Hi Andre,
Close-up view was a good idea here. Because those clouds are the real stars of the scene. And we all have seen overall pictures of Colosseum already. Beautiful light where those large stone blocks show well.
Kari

Hi Andre,
Wow, awesome and stunning colors and details in this fine photograph. Excellent composition and pov with perfect clarity and sharpness. Fine work and TFS. Gerald

Nikki

ciao Andre,
i like this different POV of most important monument of Rome.
sure the most photographed and for this difficult to show in way it originates them but you are successful much good.
good job

bonjour andr&

excellent
didier

Andre,
a novel approach to one of the most famous ruins of such a disgraceful place - the Coloseum. It seems to me that the modern galdiators (soccer, football, bike, etc.) still have there problems (doping, minor or even fatal injuries) but the compensation is appropriate, sometimes even more than appropriate. Some of these gladiators even get into the Olymp.
What makes this shot alive isn't just the purple clouds, the tight crop of the building but the light on the rihgt tip of the upper protion of the Coloseum. That is the real icing on the cake.
Peter

Perfectly caught and looking very fairy tail:)
A great, succesful work!

A.

A nice continuation to the series of "the monuments of the old continent"
It was a clever idea going to the other direction rather than trying to capture the whole of this large monument.
The clouds make an interesting look, which is close to the barbie hour. Very nice light, and dreamy presentation.
Cheers,
Deniz

Igor

Fantastic close-up view of the famous Colosseum, the omnious blood red clouds increase the feeling of drama here...

Cheers
Alexander

Salut André

A smile for your weekend!
