KING FAROUK’S LAST ABODE Photographed July 9, 2007
King Farouk (1920-1965), the last monarch of Egypt, was deposed in 1952, and exiled on the Island of Capri. Shortly before his death, he agreed to do a magazine interview. “With the number of monarchies around the world in steady decline,” the reporter asked the former king, “…how many kings, do you think, there will be at the end of century?”
King Farouk, without blinking an eye, replied,
— “Five?” the reporter repeated, the King’s answer. “And what countries will still have kings?”
— “There will be the King of England; the King of Clubs, the King of Hearts, the King of Diamonds,…”
On July 9, the Crystal Serenity anchored off Sorrento, in the magnificent Bay of Naples. There is no dock for large ships, and one has to tender into shore. Visible immediately is the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, perched high on the cliffs in Sorrento. The legendary opera tenor the “Great (Enrico) Carouso" died there in 1921. Sorrento is a favorite jumping off point to visit Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the magical Amalfi Coast. It is also a convenient site to board a jetfoil bound for the Island of Capri, a 25-minute distance. Once there, it takes three separate rides to reach the summit: a cable car, or funicular, to get to the town of Capri; then a bus to reach Anacapri. Finally, one can take a chair lift, to ascend to the highest point on the island — 585 meters (1920 feet) above sea level. The summit offers a breath taking view of the deep blue Adriatic Sea, from the equivalent height of a 190-story building. The famous rocky outcroppings are the "Fraglioni" ( brothers), with one of them forming a natural tunnel for small boats to navigate through.
I would like to dedicate this photo to my Italian friends, friendly and artistic people, whose beautiful country will always rank among the top two or three among my favorites. For its art, it ranks Number One!

I love the bird's eye view and those splendid blues. The movement of the boat lends a liveliness to the shot. I like the contrasts in the earthen tone and green in the foreground to the blues and whites of the shot. Nicely done!!
Traveller (672) 2007-08-12 21:17
Bulent - an interesting note; I love and rank Italy highly as well; just too much color saturation, I am afraid... The colors there are vivid enough by themselves, I believe.

lovely shot of the 'Faraglioni' rocks from a good angle...those white trails of boat are as always pretty amazing especially on that crisp blue sea...I also got a shot of the rock formation before but from a different location, you see that little orange building on the rock to the left ;) beautiful pic!

Nice to have you back Bulent,
the look of a seagull in flight, is in the shot,
the view is very nice and the little details are a pleasure for the eyes, good photojob and the note is as always very good. have a nice day.
Dpbours (222) 2007-08-12 23:29
That is a beautiful overview shot! I really like the trails of the boats in the water. Maybe a bit soft in the distance. But I had the same thing with an overview shot I posted a few days ago and there just is a maximum to the unsharp masking one can do without the result looking artificial. Nice one!
fleopold (1375) 2007-08-13 0:01
Nice shot with very good POV. Maybe the two motor yachts in the right side of the photo would need a little bit more space.
Greetings from Austria!

You are right: that is a magical looking coastline, the light is superb, wonderful composition and attractive colours. Beautiful image you got there, love the point of view, excellent lighting and textures, in a marvellous sunny day, well captured. I love the details in the cliff and the white boat in the sea. Highly informative note too, as always. Thanks for the dedication (hope all is doing well with you and your new book).

With all kind of boats this looks like a pretty busy bay, and point of view is really impressive.
The sea is so bright blue and the spiky rocks are just amazing.
snunney (84971) 2007-08-13 0:51
A perfect vantage point to photograph this beautiful inlet. I like the boats dotted about over that beautiful blue water and the traces of the speeding ships' wakes. Excellent colours and clarity. An interesting and amusing anecdote about the last King of Egypt rounds out the whole story.

A superb plunging POV, with great blue sea with the many white boats. Good exposure and reasonable sharpness. The framing is fine as well.
thea0211 (1365) 2007-08-13 7:12
magic blue indeed and a very appealing bird's eye view in this image. good contrast between the water blue(ish) shades and the white(ish) tiny (at least from this point of view :) - boats and their trails!
well seen and crafted composition (you obviously took advantage of your visit and brought some visual marvels back to us) with the usual good note to top it up - thanks!

Beautiful point of view.

What a fantastic POV you had; almost a bird's eye view. I love the sight of all the boats, some trailing their wakes. I also like the vivid blues and don't find it too saturated at all.
Cormac (26563) 2007-08-13 7:50
Beautiful shot! There is no place like Capri, instantly recognizable and home to the rich and powerful since the ancient Romans. Those rock pillars are very dramatic, and the bay full of boats helps us to see the massive scale. Well done!
jwmunro (286) 2007-08-13 8:43
Hello Bulent -
Excellent bird's eye view of the Capri Harbor. The moving boats, IMO, make this image really work as they provide some dynamic tension. Without them, the image would be nice postcard equivalent but not very impressive. The different shades of blue are very nice and pleasing. The boats do add scale to the image and the rocks adjoining the harbor. Excellent and informative note. I am finding the notes to be as important as the image and in some cases more important. As a Geographer by training and a Cartographer by trade the notes can make a mediocre image stand tall. Well done.
Thank you for sharing.

The trip to the top was worth it for this beautiful view and your colorful frame augments its beauty. A scene without the horizon doesn't always work but you managed a fine outcome here!

gunbud (34066) 2007-08-13 19:55
Your vantage point of this spectacular photo was very well chosen. The view down to the vibrant blue sea with its wonderfully contrast white from the wakes of the several boats all going toward the beautiful harbor that is so pleasingly framed the unique rock islands sprillaing towards the charming village on the hillside. I loved the little bit of wit added by King Farouk.

Hello dear Bulent,
Indeed Italy is one of the beautiful country in the world for culture
What a depth here, the big rocks are small dots in the water together with the lovely small yachts with his white foam layer behind the boats.
Thanks for sharing.

Hello Professor "A"
I saw this picture earlier in TE & I see it again through your eyes. Great bird's eye view of the rocks & the picture would not have been effective without the watermarks left by the speed boats. Looks like a busy place with so many boats around. The rock in the Fg actually gives us a fair idea about the depth down below from your shooting position. Fabulous note as always.
jwillie44 (1234) 2007-08-15 4:49
nice above scene of all the wonderful activity and exquisite life that is going on below. The blue water is also very refreshing to me.

it's good to see you back!
those trails following the boats are always pretty efficient at creating a graphic and dynamic aspect in a photo. Since dynamism and graphism are not always easy to find in a landscape pic, it's good to have them here!:D
Tue (27696) 2007-08-15 10:41
A great view down to the wonderfully blue sea and the impressive rock formations. The many boats on the water look great too from here, a nice pattern of white spots. Well captured and thanks for sharing!
happypoppeye (4817) 2007-08-15 17:19
Nice landscape shot Bulent. Composition is perfect, with the white wakes of the little boats framing the alcove perfectly, yet all the boats in the alcove are just sitting there pleasantly. It is as if they all want to get in, find the perfect spot, and just sit there and enjoy the view. Colors are excellent, especially in teh deep blue water and your composition excellent, with the bit of land in the foreground and the inclusion of the cliffs on the left. Just an all around great looking photo - I need a vacation.

Very nicely executed photo Bulent. I love the inspiring viewpoint from above in this lovely setting with those sharp edged rocks against the deep blue sea. A very attractive photo Bulent, just as the congratulation points have attested.
PixelTerror (0) 2007-08-16 0:55
The boat traces on the top and right look a little bit "hot" on my screen, but they contrast very well against the deep blue water and all these boats movign around or anchored populate and animate the view well, the PoV is priceless.
Have a nice day,

henrytf (985) 2007-08-16 2:49
your photograph is one of the nicest I have seen about
Capri. When I look at the splendor of that landscape I can't help remembering Axel Munthe's book, The Story of San Michel; that was one of my favourite when I was young. I haven't been there yet but your photograph will certainly influence our future travel destination.
It goes without saying that your note is very well done as always. I can easily guess how much pleasure your take in writing those notes. Probably as much as we have in reading them.

Good evening Bulent,
The foreground tones and hues really contrast well with the rest of the scene, providing good balance. The POV gives a magnificent view and it is amazing as to the number of boats flying hither and thither. Good overall tonal quality and of course accompanied by your usual excellent note. Cheers.

Hello Dear Professor,
Did you put on your wings for this absolutely awesome POV???
Such a crowded traffic on the sea, and who says there is no traffic jam in naval transportation?
The rocks, the traces of the vessels, the tiny figuring of all... All of them are absolutely worth photographing.
Thank you for sharing and warm regards :)
jpinkham (870) 2007-08-26 8:55
Very nice the vivid blue of this image, Bulent, and the aerial view showing the dimensions of those upthrust rocks. Also effective is the way you've captured the spume and motion of the boats as they circle the rocks and near the harbor. There is a pleasing dynamism in that. The seeming triangle of water where the boats are concentrated further adds to the composition, and I like the simple, tasteful, complementary frame as well.
sayan (2617) 2007-08-28 3:34
The thumbnail looks like a satellite picture Prof Atalay. Wonderful blue colours in the image and the small boats are adding a contrast. Wonderful pov too and a nice note to accompany with.

stego (24030) 2007-08-31 7:44
What a view and compo!!! I guess it would also result very well without the boats, but they make it wonderfully dynamic. You managed to use all those random positions and trajectories to achieve a beautifully balanced compo.
It surely deserves every point it got!
TFS for sharing your enviable trip with us.
banyanman (7789) 2007-08-31 22:48
This certainly is a breathtaking view, Bulent, and I can't imagine how many millions of dollars are invested in all those yachts down there in the bay - looks like a popular spot for the rich and famous! It looks like it took a lot of effort to get to this POV, but your effort was well rewarded with a perfect composition. I liked your story about the interview with King Farouk. If he were alive today he might be surprised at how many monarchies have survived around the world - many countries in Asia (including Malaysia where I live) still have kings, and Thailand next door has a king who is revered by his subjects probably more than any other monarch in the world. Cheers . . . David
Didi (57256) 2007-09-02 1:35

Magnificent point of view on this cape continued by a series of rocks. If it hadn't been for the blue and the luxurious yachts, I would have thought for a moment, this was Brittany's "Tas de Pois" at the Penhir point in France.
Only, ours is a lot wilder, more dangerous and not so often blue. I am posting you a WS, for you to compare!
Thanks for sharing!

balatrek (7455) 2007-09-11 4:51
Excellent perspective, I have created a great composition, I like the wakes that create the boats in the water, the height is impressive, I believe that it contrasts are a little strong, but this does not affect the result of the work, is a great shot, thanks to share.
Matthew-Watt (5956) 2007-09-28 12:38
Certainly a most impressive place to build my home. Fit for a King. A splended array of watercraft have been captured here; the white trails provide a stunning contrast to the infinite ocean. A remarkable POV, the central rock pillars are breathtaking alone, dwarfing the ships. The slice of FG gives a bit of extra depth and some well earnt colour variation. Sensational.

Ciao dear Bulent,
I gladly give the 200th point to this beautiful image, captured from a truly privileged POV. I read with interest your notes and the anecdote of the interview to the King Farouk.
Thank you for your dedication, I am honored, even if the Italians have so many defects! :-)
Ciao, have a nice Tuesday!

This is indeed the same location as my photo looking up at the same rocky peak. The central sea stack has an arch in the middle and the boat I was on went right through it with just a few inches to spare either side. Nice repetition of the boats in the blue harbor. Tfs!
