Photographer’s Note

Continuing with my travelogue: after a day of cycling from Urbino to Gubbio, I took advantage of our rest day to explore the town. Much less tourist-trod than Urbino, but at least as fascinating in my view, this image is only the seventh TE posting from this town. It was a rather grey and cool day, but I managed to catch a hint of sunshine during the morning. This huge building which dominates the town is the Palazzo dei Consoli which is now a museum.

The city's origins are very ancient: as Ikuvium, it was an important town of the ancient Umbrian people in pre-Roman times, and is famous for the discovery there of the Eugubine (or Iguvine) Tables, a set of bronze tablets that together constitute the largest surviving text in ancient Umbrian. After the Roman conquest in the 2nd century BC the city remained important, as attested by its Roman theatre, the second-largest surviving in the world. Today the historical center of Gubbio is of decidedly medieval aspect: the town is austere in appearance because of the dark grey stone, narrow streets, and Gothic architecture.

Looking down to the left you can see the white shades of the busy market in the square, while the red flag just visible is one of thousands put up for the annual town festival – the Corsa dei Ceri, which had been held a couple of days earlier.

This is a stitch of three vertical shots at 18mm. As a WS I’m posting a different crop – which do you prefer?
