It being a holiday here in Scotland I have spent the day walking parts of the ancient Roman road called 'Dere Street' that linked Hadrians Wall to the Firth of Forth in southern Scotland
In 1 AD the Roman emporer Agricola bult a huge fort at a place called 'Chew Green' straddling the English and Scottish border and a place to administer the northern section of Dere Street. Now just grassy mounds, it was the largest northern outpost of the people who built this wonderful place
Its a long way to Chew Green from these impressive ruins in the Roman Forum in Rome, yet they are all part of the same rule. I wonder whether the people who served the empire from here had any knowledge of their outer fronteer.
Try 'Chew Green' and 'Dere Street' on Google for more information on the northern Roman edge!!
