Violin Player Photo

Photographer’s Note

I came across this man, just at the entrance of the castle, and the sound of his violin was really nice. The looks on his face, and his expression came interesting to me and smiled at him and took a few shots of him. He stopped playing the violin and asked me for 2 euros to be able to take photos of him.

This is an excellent portrait, Salvator. The light shines nicely across his face, even with a hooded jacket on. I like the expression and your colors are bright and clear, great detail. REALLY nice shot!! I loved the note, too. It made me laugh. TFS, Shelly

A good portrait which is almost there but not quite IMHO.

I would have liked to see the instrument in frame at the lower right, a shallower DOF, and the shadow of the bow at a lower angle (meaning you would have had to wait until the man was playing the top string).

I think you could have achieved that with a slightly different POV while still getting the bow itself in an interesting position composition wise.

It also seems slightly "tight".

Still, it is a nice effort,

Interesting central comp. Very sharp with good color. You have captured the mans emotion well, which I am sure was conveyed in his music. It doesn't both me to much that you have cut the mans hand off. Anyhow well done.

Kemancı muhteşem, bana bizim Ortaköylü kemancıları anımsattı biraz, ama bu kemancı sıradan biri ; bizimkiler daha aristokrat takımından. Ayrıca Bülent Atalay'ın açıklamalarına da bayıldım. Bu sitenin en iyi tarafı da bu olsa gerek; neler neler öğreniyoruz.

Hello Salvator,

It is an excellent portrait. The composition, sharpness, exposure are all excellent. You were kind to him, giving him the two Euros; he was kind in helping you to produce a successful photo. The rich yellow and flesh tones have reproduced beautifully. As for the composition, either on purpose or just intuitively, you have cropped the picture so that the subject's left eye (on the right side of the picture) falls very close to the vertical centerline of the picture. It was discovered by the British born psychologist Christopher Tyler in 1998 that in most great single-subject portraits, the center-line (vertical bisector of the canvas) passes through one eye of the subject. This is true of Leonardo's three portraits of women (Ginevra de'Benci, Cecilia Gallerani, and La Giaconde), most of Rembrandt's miraculous works, and even in some Picassos that this is a intuitive principle. It is not taught in art classes, very good artists independently discover and impliment the principle. I wrote a book on the intersection of art, mathematics and science, "Math and the Mona Lisa," and I am especially sensitive to such beautifully conceived and implimented photos.

Bilmiyorum, kültür mantarı olarak algılanmaktan çekiniyor olsam da bu fotoğrafı görür görmez aklıma Mussorgsky'nin Bir Sergiden Tablolar adlı eserindeki "Il Vecchio Castello"nun Maurice Ravel versiyonunun geldiğini belirtmek istedim. Çünkü orada, eski bir kalenin önünde, yağmurlu bir günün karanlığında keman çalan yaşlı bir adam anlatılır ve melodisi de son derece hüzünlüdür. Bu sebeple çağrışım yapmış olabilir...
Keman çalan yaşlı bir insanın 2€ için bu hale gelmesinin içler acısı olması kadar, yüzündeki üzgün ifade de geceme hüzün verdi.
Napoli'den manzara ve mimari yerine böyle içli ve duygusal fotoğraflar yolladığınız için teşekkür ederim.
