A small statue of Mother Mary outside the church ruin of San Galgano, Tuscany. There is a tradition in Italy and other catholic counties to hang small crucifixes on the religious statues. I would have liked to describe the background for that but I lack the knowledge. Instead - if you know why and when this custom is used please let me know!

hi very nice shot. i do not know the stroy either but whatever it is it surely speaks about devotion. because its the same thing your photo communicates.

Thanks for sharing it

Hi Ebbe
I love those kind of details; nice colours contrasting the white statue. Well seen compo.
Greetings and all the best foor 2007
Albrecht

Hi Ebbe,

a pretty poignant and well-framed shot. The crosses add a nice bit of color.

this one is so strong ebbe... simple yet poetic...divine rather...
happy new year...

Oh, San Galgano! I love it so much... and it was also in May a few years ago that I went there...did you see Tarkovsky's Nostalgia? Well, many scenes were shot in that Cystercian abbey and also around in the Tuscan countryside, in one of the Bagnis.
The tradition you are asking of, Ebbe, I think relates to the Virgin Mary and the rosary, people praying with the Rosary and asking her intercession for the sick or those who suffer, by placing these rosaries on the statue. At least this is what I would believe.
The shot is of course very beautiful, tight frame that works and a beautiful diagonal created between the colourful crosses and the sculpture's hand.
Very nice work,
Happy new year to you,
sasa

simpel yet so beautiful and effective, Ebbe. tight frame, a splash of colors in the rosaries and the textures...

I have a task today, iŽll tell you later.

all the best to you in 2007 my friend. healthy peace and prosperity.

Hi Ebbe
Lovely close-up work. The three colours of the crosses are very pretty against the marble background. And I also like the light coming from the side. Excellent pleasant shot full of tranquility.
Happy new year to you and family,
CheukHin

Apparently you and I were in Italy at the same time last year, just a couple regions apart, though. San Galgano was a place I really wanted to get to but didn't quite make it. Closest I got was Tarquinia still quite a distance away. This is a beautiful mix of color of plastic and the marble. I particularly like that both the stone (marble?) statue and the plastic crucifixes have the same texture. Both are very plastic in appearance but couldn't be less alike. It's quite sombre and beautiful. I think more contrast would be good for a shot like this. But then I do have a liking for high contrast images.

Hi Ebbe,
This is an excellent close up shot, I love the way you have chosen to compose the shot to include the hand and the crucifixes only. The sharpness and details are great and the colours of the crossess stand out nicely against the white stone of the statue. Well seen and photographed.
Regards
Wanda
