Tempio di Vesta, Piazza Bocca della Verità
Il Tempio di Ercole Vincitore o Ercole Oleario, comunemente noto come il Tempio di Vesta, sorge in Piazza Bocca della Verità a Roma, poco distante dal Tempio di Portuno all'interno del foro Boario.
La sua costruzione, risalente al II secolo a.C., fu commisionata da un ricco mercante romano, Marcus Octavius Herrenus, che la dedicò ad Ercole protettore degli oleari, corporazione a cui il mercante molto probabilmente apparteneva.
Successivamente restaurato sono l'impero di Tiberio, deve la sua conservazione, come molti altri monumenti romani, al fatto di essere stato trasformato in chiesa.
Questa prima dedicata a Santo Stefano delle Carrozze, fu poi consacrata a Santa Maria del Sole, perché poco distante dalla chiesa, sui margini del Tevere, fu ritrovata una immagine della Madonna da cui partiva un raggio di sole.
Il tempio ha forma circolare ed è costruito in marmo; fu il secondo edificio costruito in questo materiale nella Roma antica ed è il più antico giunto fino a noi.
La cella cilindrica, circondata da venti colonne con capitelli corinzi, nove dei quali risalgono al restauro di epoca tiberiana, presenta degli affreschi risalenti la XV secolo con scene della Madonna ed i Santi.
Della copertura originaria (l'attuale copertura è di epoca moderna) rimane unicamente un blocco di marmo, che però riporta l'iscrizione in base alla quale si è risuciti a determinare a chi fosse dedicato il tempio, oltre che il nome dello scultore, il greco Skopas minore.

Temple of Vesta, Rome
The Temple of Hercules Victor or Hercules Olivarius, located in the Forum Boarium in Rome, is a round temple of Greek 'peripteral' design (surrounded by colonnades on all sides). This layout caused many to mistake it for a temple of Vesta, but it has been determined to be a temple of Hercules. Hercules was a favorite divinity for traders, so it is appropriate that it would be in a forum.
Dating from about 120 BCE, the temple is 14.8m in diameter and consists of a circular cella within a concentric ring of 20 x 10.66 m tall Corinthian columns resting on a tufa foundation. These elements supported an architrave and roof which have disappeared. The original wall of the cella and the columns remain but the current tile roof was added later. Palladio suggested a dome, though this was apparently erroneous. The temple is the earliest surviving marble building in Rome.
By 1132 the temple had been converted to a church, known as St. Stephen 'of the carriages'. Additional restorations (and a fresco over the altar) were made in 1475. A plaque in the floor was dedicated by Sixtus IV. In the 17th Century the church was renamed St. Mary 'of the Sun'.
This temple and the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli inspired the centralized churches of the Renaissance.
The temple was recognized officially as an ancient monument in 1935.

A very interesting shot, I like the compo of it - the tree in the middle looks fab. Great that the photo is balck and white - it gives it more, hmm, taste!

Masterful composition "sqeezing" in the building between these tow trees and also placing it on the left side and allowing a lot of area on the right to breath. The choice of the grainy B&W suits extremely well.

Very good division of the frame using the bold tree trunk. I like the textures of the old temple a lot and the lighting you've here is wonderful. Beautiful Roman picture. TFS.

Un'altra bella cartolina di altri tempi di Roma.
Bellissime queste foto in BN.
Forse in questa hai alzato un pochino troppo i contrasti ( vedo un leggero alone attorno all'albero ) ma anche questo, assieme al disturbo dell'immagine, contribuisce ad invecchiare la 'cartolina'.
