| This giant rock that seems to arise from olive-tree fields is the eastern limb of the Montagna della Majella. For geologists, it is an apenninic anticline, this is to say a pile of rock that has been folded during the creation of the Apennine Mountain Chain. In order to give an idea of the strengths that were at the origin of these deformations, we can say that these rocks were at sea level 7 million years ago and can be found nowadays at almost 3000m above... Now this mountain is a national park where nature lovers can find an incredible quantity of interests. Numerous species of endemic or rare plants and animals(bears, wolfs, orchids, ...)are present on this area, spectacular geology can be appreciated both by professional geologists and by nature lovers. Good observators can even find petroleum in several location of the natural park !!! |

BTW, " 7 million years ago ", or was it 7,000 years ?
I bet geologists do love this, the rock is so unusual. Great capture Loic!

From a tropical country as i am, i found this place amazing. I see an eye on the the mountain! The verdant foreground gives a good contrast to bald rocky mountains backdropped by blue sky. Great photo!

Beautiful and impressive shot of the Majella!
I like the green in the foreground and the rocks filling the greatest part of the photo, giving an imposing sense.
Only a little thing: couldn't do anything to avoid those cables up right?
Best regards
