The medieval square towers of Italy are well-known. Built as watch-towers or mini-fortresses, their tall slender silouettes adorn the skylines of such towns as San-Gimignano in Tuscany. In fact, this "fashion" has spread to the North in the Middle Ages as far as Regensburg in Bavaria. But have you ever seen a top of such tower... from above? If not, you probably have not yet been to Bologna, because in Bologna one almost cannot avoid climbing to the top of the 100m-high Asinelli tower, which is the highest in the city and from which one can see the top of the neighbouring 50m-high Garisenda tower, which is located on the same little square. This view is shown in the picture. In the WS you can see these two towers together, shot from the ground. Both of them are slightly leaning towards each other.

I dedicate this post to Oscar (barrufeto_77), a TE specialist in Italian roofs. He has already posted several views from this tower, so here's an alternative take:)

privjet,
not bad, not bad at all, brave pov, i for one wouldnt have this sort of take at all,
i think the "difference" here is in this "dizzy" pov!
good one,
best wishes, j.

Hi Alexander,
Very impressive, great PoV. Nicely composed and superbly captured. Great shot.

Serwus Alexander !
Not for those with fear of heights, no doubt :) Glorious pov, good realization of human's eternal dream of flying and nice idea to avoid distortions :) The towers look exceptionally here. Fantastic Work, great result.
Best wishes,
M.

Yep, it works for me. The sense of depth is absolutely there. Good framing and nice details.

Hi Alex, fantastic shot with a really vertical view down on the other tower and the square!
it's funny cause Barruffetto/Oscar uploaded yesterday an image from the same POV, really similar!
excellent shot.
thanks, ciao

Hello Alexander,
Very nice view indeed. The height from which you have taken this is just amazing. It shows how improved the midieval architechture was. Erecting a tall structure is not easy and that too this is from the olden days. Wow..
The roofs are excellent to see and the sense of scale is added by the presence of the people on the ground. Good quality though sccaned from a print. Nice work indeed and thanks for showing - Vikram

The color version against the B&W of Oscar, add a totally different mood, ...is difficult to say which is better..
excellent work Alexander!!

have a nice day,
Fabio.

Hello Alexander,
WOW! What a breathtaking view, love the POV, the lights are wonderful, good sharpness and colours. A very high quality for scanned image.
Well done Sahsa,
Regards,
Vivek

excellent! did you rent a helicopter?
well composed! gives us a good idea of the city design
well done
marianna

Quite vertiginous, Alexander! I love the perspectve looking down, the way the towers narrow towards the base. This is certainly a much better representation of the square than the workshop, which proves again that the curse of photographers since time began has been wires. It's another good scan with naturalistic colours. I like the skylight on the 'roof' of the Garisenda tower, and wonder if anyone was looking up, taking a shot perhaps.
Regards,
Andrew

Excellent view Alexander, compliments, beautiful composition and vertiginous landscape.
Ciao
Vinicio

HI Alexander, this is a nice view stright down. Ususally they are taken more or less from a diagonal, but I like the view this way. It makes it all so small on the ground. Looking at the square tower I was reminded of San Gimignano, such a lovely medieval town with all those towers.
Bologna is still on my wishlist, as I still have not been there, and this makes me curious.

I saw somewhere in the forum that you sold a photo to a magazine. Congratulations! That's what we all want. Very nice for you.

What an angle, Alex, almost very scary. It is a fantasy of shapes and colors, lines and puzzles on those Bolgnaise roofs. Beautiful.

Hi Alexander,
Well I've never been to Bologna and it's the first time I see such a view! This is really an impressive POV, almost the same kind you can have trom the top of a mountain! :o)
I like the way you've chosen to frame exactly vertically towards to ground. The tiny people at the bottom give great height to the photo.
Regards, Brigitte

Hi Alexander,
This is beautiful... and aweful, as I hate heights lik this! Your point of view is most impressive...
Good lines in the composition, lots of interesting details to explore!
Greetings,
Pablo -

What a great POV it truly looks like you are flying here Alexander. I really like the geometry of this. Im a huge fan of medieval architecture like this and you captured that so beautifully.

This is a great viewpoint, I'm almost getting dizzy just looking at your photo. Great composition and interesting rooftops, but what makes this so good is that fantastic viewpoint. The quality is not bad for a flatbed scan either.
Good work.
Ben

Hi Alexander.

Pictures like this one really gives me vertigo and nausea.
Many people lack courage to take a photo like this. Did you use a wide lens?

take care, Aleks

Hi alexander,

I like this one very much. The POV is rather unusual compared to what we usually see, and there lies the strength of this photo.

Composition and exposure are very good too.

Best regards,
Carlos

Once again, excellent shot. What a great perspective. I am wondering how did you do that :) All compliments :)

Uhau Alexander!
This one attracted my attention immediately. I love such POVs and this is an outstanding one, because of the strong perspective given by the tower. I almost feel dizzy. Great composition with all the other roofs and nice to see the other tower at right, as well. Congratulations for this superb work!
Cheers,
Ricardo

Hi Alexander,
what a vertiginous POV ! Where is my paragliding ? ;-)
Nice architecture, I like to see how narrow are the streets.
Well done

Hi Alex,
I like this excellent shot,
great POV and realistic colors.

Have a nice day,
Alex

Hi Alexander, a scarying view here.... All those details at the bottom make it interesting with this little black road as well, I didn't know about this place in Italy, was only a town along the way to the south for me, good to know...

Yan

Woow! Fantastic composition and Super POV! Great impression, vertiginous shot! Thank you, nice days,

Did you guys got a feeling of dizzyness while looking at this picture. Incredible perspective, great photographic skills or, my head recently has implications due to excessive hot weather.
Either way - if it inflicting - it must be good.
