Photographer's Note

Those of you who've seen the film "The Sound of Music" will immediately associate Tyrol with Austria. But this is not completely correct, as a large part of Tyrol, namely South Tyrol, lies in Italy! Moreover, Castle Tyrol, which you see on this picture and which is located near the town of Merano (same location as one of my previous posts), has given its name to the whole Tyrol! In XIII century, the castle belonged to the earls of Tyrol. Shortly after that, in 1363, the castle and whole Tyrol was quickly seized by the Habsburgs and was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end of World War I (1918) when it was ceded to Italy. The majority of the population is still German-speaking. An excellent museum of the history of Tyrol is located in the castle.

The bird that is flying above the castle is a falcon and lives in the castle falconry with several other birds. Every day, the birds are being released for a while for the tourists to take pictures and for the birds to feel "free as a bird". Remarkably, they always return...
