Lisa (delpeoples) has been patiently waiting for me to upload some photos from her beloved city of Naples.
Well, here you go Lisa :) I'll post another one or two as well in the next day or so.
Before arriving in Naples I did what I always do, research online for interesting or strange places/subjects to photograph.
This came up on my search - its the entrance to the underground subway station in Naples.
In the photo you can see the long lines which are the escalators, which have awesome white glass and lights to make them stand out. While up in the ceiling you can see the large Blue Egg shaped subject. Its actually a large whole in the ceiling, going up about maybe 15-20 feet to the road up above. Think of it like an upside down Ice Cream Cone, large opening as you see it here, but getting smaller and thinner as it reaches the surface. The white light you see in it is a small opening on the street level, like a window.
Seeing this woman photograph it reminded me of some alien sci-fi movie or something, as if she's about to be beamed up into space.
We literally stood down here for about 10 minutes photographing this thing, and everyone who came down or went up the escalator copied us and did the same lol
I guess they were all intrigued by what we were up to.
Lisa has probably seen this before, but I was hoping to show something unique from Naples - let me know Lisa!
thanks for looking
I will upload some wider angle versions in the WS

Hi, Craig, my neighbor today again,
It's just fantastic view and reminds me a music of Jean Michael Jarre, for example. Outstanding idea for ceiling, , in the thumbnail it reminds me a collage from two different images. Great!

Craig, did you warn this poor woman she was about to get abducted by aliens!?!? She seems so calm about the whole thing!!!
Seriously, what a shot! Perfectly conceived using the escalator to create strong lines up to the ceiling, and the woman taking the picture on her way up? Outstanding! I love everything about it, down to the way she's lit by the illuminated rails! Nicely done, straight to favorites.

the graphism of the layout and the strong colours is fantastic and catches the viewer's interest instantly. When we perceive the space and depth defined by the symmetrical patterns, we become even more captivated. The lady in the foreground as well as the group of people in the distance enhance our interest and sense of scale. Looking at the thumbnail, I thought of a gigantic, alien spider but viewing the big picture stimulates the imagination much more. The workshop pictures are superb too. Your light management was exquisite, it played an essential role. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

Very nice futurist decor
rigoletto (34269) 2014-07-08 8:51
this is one heck of a "photo of the week". i am red / purple with jealousy. don't tell lisa, but no photo from pompeii can take me to naples, while this single one can :)
holmertz (42701) 2014-07-08 8:56
This is impressive in every way. The architecture, your composition, how you managed the light etc. Nobody needs to be a genius to realize how this place must have fascinated you. All three photos are great but this one is certainly the one that deserved the most attention, mainly because of the woman.
All the best,
besnard (53922) 2014-07-08 8:56

Hello Craig ,
Railway or subway stations often provide interesting subjects . The thumbnail was quite intriguing . You've very well captured the escalator and the ceiling with an attractive graphism . The presence of the woman taking a picture is a real bonus .

very fine view from underground subway station in Naples. All the details are excellent.Nice shot.
worldcitizen (7189) 2014-07-08 11:10
This is really cool! I love the blue color of that "space portal", and the pattern on the ceiling around it. I also like that you captured that lone woman, who was also taking a photo of the same spot. The long lines are great, too. All public spaces should be both functional and artistic - it would help us photographers out a lot! :-)

Hi Craig,I can not believe that in a city left to its own because of bad policy, there are some things like that .. ehehe ... I've never been in Naples, and your choice for the 1st post from there is terrific, 3 great photos that create a great perspective and an exceptional optical effect, a true masterwork!Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano
siudzi (34113) 2014-07-08 11:56
Wow! What a place! I have never seen pics of it! Really original and creative design which creates a superb opportunity for photography. Excellent work Craig! Bravo!
Royaldevon (31171) 2014-07-08 13:03
Oh, Craig, this is a cracker!
The lines radiate to the corners giving a first impression of a huge, colourful spider!
You have achieved a wonderful sense of depth, with soft colours and textures abounding!
I'm sure Lisa will love it!
My warm regards,
mesutilgim (86558) 2014-07-08 13:08
A real masterpiece in your gallery !
Great graphical effect.
TFS and best regards
PaulVDV (23035) 2014-07-08 13:12
Great picture of the very long escalator leading to a huge abstract artwork.
That must be a fantastic subway station!
The woman taking a picture is standing on the ideal place.
Best regards, Paul

very unusual shot from Naples and great POV and perspective with great geometrical lines and amazing shot. great.....
photoray (12777) 2014-07-08 16:11
Not my stereotype concept of Naples, especially known for its water connections. I wanted to be there for the America's Cup races last year.
This scene is very provocative, and does seem other worldly; the oval art is dominate and beckons us Trekies.
Thanks for sharing,
delpeoples (53523) 2014-07-08 20:29
Thank you so much for posting this photo. It's wonderful and I can only join Luciano and the others in congratulating you on it. I reckon it's one of your best shots. To answer your question, no I haven't seen this part of the Metro before. Last year we drove, so went nowhere near it. They've been building the Metro for decades now and progress keeps getting halted because they keep finding archeological exhibits. So good on you for spotting this and for photographing it so superbly. I imagine the modernity would have really appealed to you!
Cheers and I loved your photo of the Galleria Umberto on Insta too!

Hi Craig, From all your photos from your last trip this one is the best inmo. Maybe Vatican stairs from below are equal. I do the same thing, I mean, I make research before the trip and find less known places and it is great joy to surprise other people. But how on earth you found it before, it amazes me. I tried to make photos in metro many times but never with good result. The presence of the girl is here the clue. Amazing composition and sharpness. What I find strange that it is long and not steep. Stunning, congratulations!!

This is superb Craig and I cannot say which of the 3 shots works best; they are all wonderful. This one works really well with the girl beautifully positioned and displaying her obvious interest in the scene. The whole mood is one of fascination with a science fiction ambience.
Your note and this shot clearly illustrate the value of doing your homework!
Sergiom (62784) 2014-07-09 6:04
saxo042 (37594) 2014-07-09 8:14
A fantastic perspective and a really marvellous escalator. You have chosen the best version of all three herewith the woman at a very good spot. Excellent!
ikeharel (59435) 2014-07-09 11:33
Blue UFO depicted to the tunnel ceiling and prevailed with its tone's on the whole, a fascinating effect, Craig, and superbly collected.
Good DOF-upwards, clarity and the young lady taking a cell-photo is a nice humen-touch addition.
boa (6153) 2014-07-09 11:44
it nice to see that you have been to Europe again and taking photographs, especially since i like your personal photographic style. Wow..this is really something special..a perfect opportunity to take cool shoots. I agree, it looks like something from outer space that eat human beings.(i wonder what the artist have smoked when he created this:))
Excellent depth, light&colors, well done my friend!
Silvio1953 (125483) 2014-07-09 11:51
Ciao Craig, lovely composition with fantastic perspective, I like insertion of fotographer in action, splendid light and colors, very well done my friend, ciao Silvio

I know next to nothing about Naples, but I still need to say I wouldn't have expected such a scene from there. Very clean for Italian. Very strong scifi feeling. Sliding stairs to the mothership...
Tones, symmetry, sharpness all spot on.
jcpix (13716) 2014-07-09 14:04
Indeed, what IS going on in Naples? Whoa, what a wild shot, and definitely an original by all accounts...even snuck one by Lisa! :) This large blue egg is a beauty, and I'm having quite a time wrapping my mind around its actual presence in this composition. It seems to take on a different effect each time I look up from the keyboard.
It has funky dimension, especially along its bottom curve where it looks like the textured ceiling just fades right into the open space...a deceiving perception all the way around. And wouldn't you know it, darned Gert....having that lady in the frame is the absolute perfect addition to bring it all together. :)) Seriously though, her presence and act of taking a picture herself holds so much more intrigue, makes me want to know what results she came away with from her position??
And wow, what a stellar converging perspective....that's one looooooong escalator! You might need to pack a lunch for that ride. Love the originality of this one, not what I was expecting to see from Naples. Job well done! Enjoy the rest of your day. Take it easy.
Cheers from the dustbowl,
rychem (25080) 2014-07-10 0:15
Great! The graphical effect is ideal, perfect symmetry and clever placement of this lady
tyro (20884) 2014-07-10 3:12
Yes, "Beam me up, Scotty!" immediately comes to mind here and you have taken this picture at just the very right moment as the young lady is perfectly placed in the frame, holding her camera aloft to take a snapshot of this remarkable ceiling.
Fabulous vibrant colours, a good strong composition with powerful perspective and stunning details and sharpness throughout.

adores (38591) 2014-07-26 15:10
This is a really beautiful metro station! Great dof! I like the composition with the girl taking photos in foreground! Good graphism and colours!

The lines shape and wide angle induced drama were always going to appeal to my visual sensibilities so its inevitable that I'm going to like this one.
The reason I haven't been around is due to the fact that I have been selling or recycling everything I own and logistically planning a move to Australia on Dec 26th. It's weird that my entire 52 years on this planet has now been reduced to 35 sq feet of storage space! At the same time I feel lighter without "things". It's liberating getting rid of stuff.
One thing I lost that gutted me though was my nikon camera. It got crushed by a tractor! That's the other reason I stopped posting. I had shots to post but I lost my mojo. Insurance paid upvand I got a new mirrorless camera and I'm starting to take shots again and get my mojo back.
So whilst there may be a break when I move to Australia I'll be back once I'm settled. Hey maybe I'll get to met up with Lisa!
Nice to hear from you again. Hope you are well.
