The often photographed Duomo in Florence.
It was the #1 site we were looking forward to in Florence. As you know than, the difficult task of posting a new and creative photo is very difficult.
I'm sure this has been posted before, but lets go with it anyways just because it's so much fun.
It took us awhile to locate our hotel from the train station, but when we did, walking to the Duomo was the first thing we did. And that included walking all the way to the top as these people have done in the photo here.
A must-do for everyone who visits here!
Thanks for looking

Hi Craig, another great result made by your genius, this perspective from Florence is very original and absolutely beautiful, the people on the top give us the exact idea of the big size of the Duomo Cupola, great simmetry and the usual perfect quality of detail and colors,i like it! Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Original frame on the dome, good idea with your title and the présence of people to give a scale, good sharpness too, tfs.

hehehe you know I've never climbed to see this? Aren't I naughty? Almost as bad as eating jamon instead of seeing Gaudi's art in Barcelona. But I had a ball in Florence and got up to so much mischief, I don't miss not seeing this. Anyway, I can look at your excellent photo and live vicariously through you and Tosca. Love the tight POV, the rich colours and amazing textures. All those little people up on the dome certainly give us a sense of scale, the thing is absolutely massive. Amazing how they built it! Excellent depth of field too, where all the BG houses are so clearly and beautifully defined. Nice one!
Thanks for sharing, have a great day...or is it night 2 days ago over there???

Hello Craig - So you too climbed all the steps up Giotto's Tower to see the spectacular views! How long did you have to queue, when we were there there was a 2 hour queue but we had a Firenze Card and only waited about 7 minutes! I have a very similar shot to this but with the dome offset in the frame. A shot which brings back wonderful memories (not of the huffing and puffing though)
trevormoffiet (2830) 2014-06-25 4:42
Your tight framing accentuates the size of the structure and focuses our attention on the detail of the architecture. The inclusion of the people on top makes the scale of this even more impressive. Interesting.

impressive dome and impressive view I expect. Have to admit I never realised you could get up the top like this, so I have learnt something. Really must get to Florence, but then I say that about so many places I see here on TE! Super shot!

J'ai pris exactement la même il y a une dizaine d'année.La vue est parfaite sur ce superbe dôme et les gens ont l'air bien petits au sommet. Quelle belle ville.

Close up view of the Duomo's dome reveals its impressive size and architectural details. The reddish tiles are more numerous than the tourists in summer. And the top's winged arches are eye catching.

This is a smart composition (they always are), but seeing the thumbnail I thought "Oh no, why did he cut off th top?". Now I see that the top is irrelevant. I love how you included A LOT of people in such a place, and at the same time used the shape of the dome to create an almost perfectly symmetric view of parts of Florence. This is one way of making a very often photographed monument look new and surprising.

Ciao Craig, great view of fantastic architecture, lovely composition with a lot of people on the top, beautiful clarity, wonderful colors and splendid light, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Holy moly, that's one big dome! I can safely say I have never appreciated the scale of this, so this is a new and fascinating pic for me, those people are tiny. Great way to fill the scene with the impressive structure, but still leave a beautiful view of the landscape beyond. Nice one!

very original perspective from Florence. Nice shot , great idea. Well captured and framed shot with interesting details and contrasts.

Hi craig,. how funny the view of the people on the top of duomo. They look so tiny. Fine shot. And where you were in this moment, on Giottos campanile? I was in Florence just before the Easter, it was so full of people, impossible to go there. Maybe another time? But from Piazza Michelangelo the view was also beautiful (and free:).
Warm regrads MAlgo

Since you didn't make mention of it, I'm going to assume this picture and moment was taken without incident of being yelled at...yes, no?? lol
Take a look here and I think you'll understand why I might find this picture of yours so appealing. :)
Unfortunately mine didn't turn out as good as this, but you get the idea. An awesome and inspiring view from the top of the tower, yeah? What a workout though! Even 10+ years ago when I still had some semblance of a normal physique, my legs were spaghetti by the time I made it to the top.
I never did climb the dome, but I think the tower offers a better result. Love what you did here to emphasize the size of the dome and the reality of just how small we humans are in comparison. Well worth the effort! Cool shot...too bad there isn't a slide back down though, huh...just to compensate for the hike up? :) Have a good one amigo. Take it easy.

tyro (19228) 2014-06-26 3:02
Well this is certainly a "fresh look" at this magnificent dome. And I can tell you that it was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi too - I had thought it was built by Michelangelo but Malgo (emka) was very quick to correct me - thank you, Malgo!
Yes, I don't think I've seen this Duomo's famous dome presented quite like this before, but I love it! Here we see the dome filling the frame (and more) with no distractions other than the group of tiny figures at its very top which also serve not only to add some human interest but also to give a sense of scale, showing to full advantage the massive size of this incredible structure.
Lovely light and colours, a lovely bold composition and, as always, stunning details and sharpness.
Oceania (4720) 2014-06-26 5:40
So you climbed hundreds of steps to the top of the Bell Tower. This picture shows the magnificence of the the cathedral dome. It's different from other pictures we see often. And it's wonderfully done.
dkmurphys (47600) 2014-06-26 7:31
Indeed, a spectacular panorama from the dome. Fine image, impressive architecture.
Cricri (102943) 2014-06-26 10:34
impressionnant le cadrage serré du dôme, les personnes doivent avoir une vue extraordinaire depuis la haut, ainsi il semble minuscule..

A great place for photographers!
Interesting POV and comosition.
Have a nice afternoon

there are those of us of a certain age with wonky knees who are never going to make the climb so it`s nice to see your version of this so impressive structure, the inclusion of the tiny ant like people give some idea of it`s magnitude.
Gorgeous natural colours and very clear details make this an exceptional photograph.Love it.

Oops! A place in Florence I missed although I did go to Michelangelo lookout only to have my camera battery go flat on me. I did get a shot of a green bronze David though, before this happened. Your shot gives me an excuse to go back. I rather liked Florence despite the 40c heat. The people give scale and the flattened perspective from the zoom is superb. Fantastic warm cold color contrasts between the red and blue. Tfs!

What a huge scale there!!! A nice piece of local architectural detail and good idea by homing in on part of the a bigger complex. This dominates the skyline emphasised by impressive shooting angle, horizontals and verticals working perfectly allowing you to capture the very best of this magnificent edifice. Enormous shot and pleasure to view, tfs.
PaulVDV (21089) 2014-06-30 11:03
I haven't seen a similar picture of this dome before.
It really looks like the visitors of the Duomo are on top of the world. Anyway on top of Firenze and having the whole city at their feet.
Very attractive with all the red tiles!
Best regards, Paul

Hey there Craig,
I'm due to catch up on some of your latest photos, so here comes the first critique. :-) I like the crop and focus in this shot. The people look so tiny on top of that dome, and the orange color is great. With some hills and houses in the background, the scene is really nice. It' s definitely a different view of a familiar subject.
adores (35026) 2014-07-16 17:09
It must be a great sensation to be on that balcony:)! People seem so small. A great composition, I like the way you framed it, I guess it's usually hard to have a good idea of the size of that dome and it's really huge! Great shot!
