I am quite sure that some will enjoy this shot and some will hate it. It is not a ‘realistic’ rendition of the scene but more of an impression. My aim here was to capitalize on the wonderful way the lighting lit up the vaulting in the passage way. It reminded me a little of some of the buildings in Paul Cezanne’s pre-cubist landscape paintings. Flat and blocky areas of colour but here retaining the feel of depth and perspective through the passage. I make no apologies for the colours, I like them and to my eye they work well.
This shot was taken through one of the passageways that lead into the Piazza del Anfiteatro one of the most interesting sights in Lucca. Standing in the middle you can clearly see the oval shape of a former Roman Amphitheatre. The place used to be a public venue used for events such as gladiator combats and chariot races. Hundreds of years ago the amphitheatre in Lucca was terribly neglected as it was situated in one of the worst areas in town. Poor people started to brick and close the arcaded façades to turn them into (very small) houses. That was the beginning of the metamorphosis of this old amphitheatre into how it looks today. A delightful place to relax, have a meal and people watch.

like this! They do not get any more enticing than this shot. Irresistible POV and light management that makes it so arty and beautiful. A classic image that you have presented so creatively. Well done!
Have a good weekend - B.

A very interesting and thoughtful note, not only about this place but also about your interpretation of it photographically.
The colours are indeed striking and some might say oversaturated (which I suspect they are) but, nonetheless, photography is an art form and here you have tried to stress what were those features of this scene that most appealed to you at the time.
As I say, the colours are very strong (some might say too strong) but the lighting is wonderful, particularly on the roof of the passageway in which you were standing, on the pavement and also on the distant buildings. A very fine composition with excellent depth of field, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

I am intrigued by your treatment of this imaginative shot, the range of tones are delightful in a nicely balanced composition.
Whilst it may not be everybody's taste I enjoy it immensely,so nice to see something just a little different.Well done.
Kindest regards Les.

Hello Rosemary ,
It is not a problem that the rendition is not realistic . Because the place is intersting and beautiful , and you've captured it with an incredible light creating a superb effect . Perfect framing , too .

the photo is interesting and rather bright, natural colors are set with a clever value of place and context.

This is pretty special, to me this doesn't look like just any passageway, it looks like a portal to another dimension! Perhaps the colors give it this space age Dr Who style vibe, but it works so well, and I can easily imagine some intrepid explorers of space and time stepping out into the beautiful view beyond.
I've never seen colors combined like this, and if people love it or hate it, I am firmly in the love it camp.

Your aim was successful. The composition is well-thought-out and the colours are perfect. I don't see the colours as 'blocky' but we might be interpreting that word differently. Interpretive photos are more enticing to me than 'realistic' renditions.
You have handles the darker areas well. The details in the dark areas gradually fade into the bottom corners without the blacks becoming "blocked" .

Quite a colourful mix of street lights and blue hour. I especially like the vault details. Classic Italian piazza shown in a personal way.

Hi again Rosemary
I LOVE the colours in this photo, especially the various hues of blue in contrast with the vibrant yellows. Wonderful collection of shapes textures and patterns.

Hello Rosemary. I see these colorful photos and am looking forward to the next experiments. Color is really the ultimate in modern photography. And the eye of the beholder expects intense colors. Anyway, the photo with the strong yellow and red colors looks very good.
Best rgds, Wolfgang.

Well I am with you on this one. It blurs the boundaries between photography and art and is reminiscent of Cezanne but equally, for me, Gaugin too. Bold use of colour to emphasise shape and form and of course the light makes it. Even I though, with my boundary challenging ways, might have toned the sky down a bit though! :)
As a photograph this is creative and artistic and it breaks "the rules" and opens possibilities in your mind about what we could possibly do with such use of colour. It is inspiring for me. I have a few shots from the Dali museum in Figueres that use light and colour in the same way but the composition is not as good as this shot, so I have refrained from posting them for now, until I figure out how to present them better.
Excellent - love it.

you have done a fabulous job here of presented in a painterly way a view into the piazza. I love the way the softly golden archway frames the piazza. The blue of the paving is so fab with the gold and the lights and colours seen through this frame.

You got a good shot here and I believe it's not so easy. The light is very good, even inside the tunnel and I like the colours and the lights on, in the tunnel and also in the square.
Curious_Eye (1320) 2014-08-26 15:37
The combination of colours, 2D effect curiously combined with perspective makes this an eye catching picture. Viva artistic liberty and congratulations on pushing the boundaries - I like where you have taken us!
With best regards,
