Photographer's Note

One thing which struck me about the countryside of Tuscany and Umbria were the small and varied areas of cultivated land. I didn’t see any sign of factory sized farms. Flying into Florence the landscape beneath was a patchwork of olive trees, vineyards, pasture and crops. These were punctuated by the familiar Italian cypress trees and small towns and villages.

A drive from Norcia to Castelluccio via San Pellegrino di Norcia gave us the opportunity to enjoy the variety of agricultural landscapes. I got the idea that many of the farms were small and possibly farmed by a family who had their roots in the land. I liked that. This small field caught my attention. I liked the way the farmer had plowed and sowed around the tree.
