Fountain Mask
The Mask of Fontana is located in Piazza Campello, the name of the fountain is given by the strange face, carved in stone, deformed and enigmatic, from which a copious stream of water poured in three successive baths, of which perhaps the first was a tomb .. Some details of the sculpture suggests that it is a well-defined character, perhaps a pagan deity, but we are in the field of fantasy. The expression of the form is illegible, a combination of evil, howling, tragic and ironic, and lends itself to different interpretations, but it is likely that there is nothing to interpret. Archival documents indicate that the fountain was built by a certain Emmanuel Crise, author virtually unknown. According to the inscription that appears aedicule above, the fountain was restored in 1736, but it certainly dates to the late seventeenth century. It 's likely that it has replaced an existing source and that the square has been built using materials left over from the bloody bridge.
In addition to the function of public ornament also carried out to drinking trough for horses.
Closely together to "mask" there is a fountain topped by the invited and charitable registration "drink wanderer", Bibe VIATOR, an invitation to her to drink fresh water facing the traveler.
