Photographer's Note

The name probably derives from a pre-existing settlement occupied by a shrine Umbrian pre-Roman ( Jupiter Elicius )
The birth of the castle dates back to around the year 1200 by Bernardino di Raniero , the accounts of Marsciano, whose nephew and heir Raniero IV ( Nerio ) obtained in 1282 by the bishop of Orvieto, the construction of a chapel, the Scarzuola, " in the estate at the castle of Montegiove " we can consider Nerio Bulgaruccio of the first Earl of Montegiove and ensure the building of the castle on a date prior to 1282 .
Orvieto in 1380 greatly increased the levies for the castles submitted, including Montegiove, causing the submission of the castle in Perugia until 1394 when they died of plague, leaving no heirs, the latest accounts of Montegiove , brothers Nicolò and Mariano and the castle passed into the hands of Francesco di Petruccio, abbot of Monteorvietano .
In 1400, after the death of the abbot, the montegiovesi, tired of the constant harassment prescriptive , rebelled and elected to their lord signore Francesco di Montemarte conte di Corbara, who, in 1417, sold the castle to Pier Antonio Monaldeschi della Vipera.
In 1455 it passed to Gattamelata and after the marriage of Bianca Paola Gattamelata said Todeschina , daughter of the famous leader Erasmo da Narni ( Narni 1370 - Padua 1443), and with Antonio Ranuccio Bulgarelli ( 1429-1483 ), famous captain, returned to Marsciano .
Following the Castle has been part of the State dll Church and , from 1860 , of the Kingdom of Italy.
It currently has less than a hundred inhabitants, but it was an independent town until 1869 when it was suppressed , by Royal Decree No. 5170 of 27 June , and merged with the town of that time was part of the province of Perugia. The castle Montegiove , despite numerous remakes , looks massive and superb with walls, towers , moat , a huge block of stone built on the rock , wrapped in ivy, surrounded by oaks, cypresses and firs . Everything is in order and well maintained by the current owners .
