Built by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, son of Alfonso I and Lucrezia Borgia (Ferrara 1509 - Rome 1572), on a site that has in the past had been the site of a Roman villa.
The cardinal in 1550 was appointed Governor of Tivoli by Pope Julius III and transformed the convent in which reaction housed in a magnificent villa on which channeled the waters dell'Anienepr feed the many fountains in the park.
The work was completed in 1572, shortly before the death of the cardinal.
In 1918, after various vicissitudes the villa passed to the Italian state which prompted major restoration work, restoring full and opening it to the public.
Tusculum, city pre-Roman, Roman and medieval Lazio, whose origins can be traced back at least the eighth century BC, was razed in 1191 and since then abandoned.
It was adorned with a crown of gardens and villas, especially in its lower part, turned towards Rome
The first excavations began in the nineteenth century, and various excavations continued until the last, which ended in 2001. The site, located within the perimeter of the Regional Park of Castelli Romani, is currently owned by the Mountain Community Castelli Romani and Prenestini.

Buona sera Silvio,
Wonderfully collected the view of the men-made watefall and the fontana, with a beautiful reflection on the pond.
The lady in red/black, "breaks" the pattern of grey, yet taken under the winter mild light. Fine shot.

Ciao Silvio,un taglio un po' strano,nè carne,nè pesce,tra il close up e la panoramica,comunque di qualita' eccellente,grandi dettagli e cascatelle impeccabili.Buona serata,Luciano

Hi, Silvio, my dear friend,
I have read a lot about Tivoli, but my ways lead me to another places. Perhaps it is my destiny ;)
The twisted background reminds me a mirror reflection, amazing optical effect. Thanks for this historic note.
Have a great weekend!

Very impressive architecture perhaps baroque, with the detailed base relief statues, and the magnificient Tivoli fountains mirrored in the foreground.
Must be an excellent place to relax and dream of historical treasures and romance.

This is an excellent record Silvio to show what is a Roman villa, nice view of the fountain, garden and architecture details, all the best, good night

Lovely view of these high fountains against the backdrop of this impressive building with grand architecture. Beautiful shot with good natural colors and clarity. Good reflections captured in the water as well. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting angle, really good composition, technically well. Objections: it's a little skewed to the right, if you are only slightly raised the camera - to see the whole (I'd say) the eagle at the top!

The reflections on the water are assets to the composition. The point of view is showing the details, the colour of the fountains and of the villa d'Este. The good luminosity is enhancing the colours. Have a nice day.
