St. Peter's Basilica
The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican (Latin: Basilica Sancti Petri), officially known in Italian as Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano and commonly known as Saint Peter's Basilica, is a Late Renaissance church located within Vatican City.
Designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St Peter's is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and remains one of the largest churches in the world. While it is neither the mother church of the Roman Catholic Church nor the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, Saint Peter's is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic sites. It has been described as "holding a unique position in the Christian world" and as "the greatest of all churches of Christendom.
In Roman Catholic tradition, the basilica is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and, also according to tradition, the first Bishop of Rome and therefore first in the line of the papal succession. Tradition and some historical evidence hold that Saint Peter's tomb is directly below the altar of the basilica. For this reason, many Popes have been interred at St Peter's since the Early Christian period. There has been a church on this site since the 4th century. Construction of the present basilica, over the old Constantinian basilica, began on 18 April 1506 and was completed on 18 November 1626.
St Peter's is famous as a place of pilgrimage, for its liturgical functions. Because of its location in the Vatican, the Pope presides at a number of services throughout the year, drawing audiences of 15,000 to over 80,000 people, either within the Vatican Basilica, or in St Peter's Square. St Peter's has many strong historical associations, with the Early Christian church, the papacy, the Counter-reformation and with numerous artists, most significantly Michelangelo. As a work of architecture, it is regarded as the greatest building of its age. Saint Peter's is one of the four churches of Rome that hold the rank of Major Basilica. Contrary to popular misconception, it is not a cathedral as it is not the seat of a bishop; the cathedra of the Bishop of Rome is located in the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran.

Luciano.

This is an excellent close-up of this magnificent church, where we get a good look of some of the many wonderful details. The pigeon was well captured and could very well be seen as having a symbolic significance. The warm light increases the beauty of this late Renaissance masterpiece.

Well seen and presented detail of this amazing basilica! The warm tonality of lights captured on the subject gave a superb visual result with clear blue sky above. Excellent study! TFS!

Beautiful architecture and very fine colours against the blue sky. The bird is also quite important in the picture.

Not only your framing is great, also the timing was perfect with this overflying bird, who brings so nice dynamic element to the architectural composition.
And finally the weather couldn´t be better.Blue sky makes here really lovely backdrop for this architecture.
Have a nice day

not quite a dove of peace, but a pigeon will do. The immaculate detailing here in this shot are just a joy to behold. The light brings out the glory so beautifully. Superb!

Grazie come sempre

Sublime and exquisite artwork. What craftsmanship and artistry.. hand-carved out of huge blocks of stone Marvelous.
Fabulous shot to catch the details of the sculpture in such wonderful light. They contrast so well with the azure sky. The bird adds a different angle to the scene.
Thanks for sharing an excellent picture.

ChrisJ (93442) 2013-12-25 1:52
The motion blurred pigeon animates the shot and contrasts strongly against the static stone sculptures. Good sharpness and a nice warm cold color contrast between the deep blue sky and the faint yellow red hues of the stone. Excellent sharpness and tight framing. Have a safe and happy Christmas Day and a prosperous New Year!

Great close up of some of the impresive details of the basilique, a clock and good sculptures round it
What gives de #D effect is , my idea, the color contrast golden and blue one
Of corse the pidgeon adds atractive and life at the capture
Merry Xmas from Argentina ( Country of Francisco, the pope)
mkamionka (28456) 2013-12-27 13:30
great composition. I like how you have selected the POV precisely so that the two decorative details seem close to each other. And you captured it in a pleasant warm light set against the well saturated blue sky. I remember well this clock, I have a close up photo of it as well. This place is jaw dropping! I could walk around this amazing square for hours with my camera. I hope I will have a chance to visit Rome again in my life.
The pigeon adds another humorous element here.
Kamilutka (6789) 2013-12-29 1:10
well captured bird above the building adds interest and makes the whole photo more dynamic. Good colors and very attractive warm light as well as wisely chosen tight framing add to the very positive impression.
Thanks for sharing

Angshu (53990) 2013-12-30 6:05
A good image of the top part of the Basilica taken with full zoom. Great details as we see here. The bird flying by is a great catch with good timing. A nice picture even without the bird, but surely better with it
Wishing you & your loved ones a very fine 2014
