Photographer's Note

The facade of the 1626 St. Peter's Basilica. This was taken two days before the new pope was elected, on Tuesday March 12th 2013.

I wanted to go up the dome of the St Peter's and to avoid long queues, I took the subway fairly early in the morning to Ottaviano San Pietro subway station. From there it is a 10 min walk to St. Peters square. When I got there... the square was *P A C K E D*! 1000s of people where lining up in a queue to get in the St. Peters to see a service with all the Cardinals. This service was before the start of the conclave. Nobody told me this. :)

Idon't like to wait in queues so I thought: forget the top of the dome and forget getting in St. Peters, lets get some exterior shots and go see something else. Then all of a sudden, just before 9:00, it looked like the security checks became a lot less strict and the queue was moving in turbo mode! In a few minutes the queue was gone and I also went to the security area and they let me through! Just before going in, I got this shot. Soft early morning light on the building.
