Here we are again on the island of Procida, situated in the Gulf of Naples. The architecture on this island is very characteristic and colourful, but quickly becoming delapidated. I add, however, that I would take this architecture any day over any new and shiny building. The yellow church you see is that of San Leonardo, situated in the central historical zone on the island, near the Marina Grande on Via Vittorio Emanuele. It was built in the 17th century in the Baroque style and the dome was completed in the 19th century.

Very beautiful vertical capture. A spectacular place with so many shapes and colors. Well taken!

Good Morning Lisa,
I am with you on this, the older buildings, for me, have so much more character.
This shot shows how the buildings surmounted the hilside, climbing like steps to the very summit where, of course, the church is situated. The details reveal the dilapidation but show the pride and the character. I remember similar steep slopes when climbing to the top of Capri. Drinks were essential but, on that island, our pockets were much lighter on the way down!
Have a lovely day,

a beautiful mixture of old walls and character that is just so attractive and compelling. Superb clarity and light management bring the atmosphere and beauty of this place to life in this wonderful composition. Captivating!
Have a great week - regards Brian.

Ciao Lisa ,

What a nice way of building things in Italy. They are not close to other people but they are on top of each other. A very nice vertical framing.
Have a nice day

Hi Lisa - I agree with you, wandering around old muddle-planned towns and villages is so much more 'personal' than slick modern (and often soulless) developments. Signs of life seem to be everywhere and neighbourhoods are populated by neighbours and not 'other people' This shot shows a higgledy-piggledy collection of buildings that seem to have sprung up from the earth itself. Perhaps not as convenient as a modern development but certainly charming to the eye. A fine and interesting shot Warm regards Rosemary

Nicely exposed to achieve a saturated but natural-looking sky. The wide-angle lens has made the buildings on the left fall backwards a little, but this doesn't detract from a very attractive scene.
yquem46 (35368) 2012-05-14 10:13
A good one of this little village in the islands of the Naples gulf
Nicely composed, mild light, natural colors, nice color contrast of the houses with the blue sky

marina7 (7160) 2012-05-14 11:24
a wonderful shot! You know this point of view makes it look as if all those houses were crumbling under the weight of this beautiful church really:))
Love the soft light and colors, a very airy shot. My compliments.

Hello my dear friend Lisa. I love your POV here showing us the old and the new, which I think both are beautiful. Excellent upward DOF and with great detail you've taken with colors and light control. Fantastic clarity and superb contrasts. Wonderful job Lisa!!

Hello Namaskar dear Lisa,
For some reason , these old houses have charm of their own. Very cluttered yet very beautiful. The pink one grabs the attention. The sharpness and light management are excellent. Simple subject is captured very well.
tyro (15711) 2012-05-14 13:55
Just as well that your aunt doesn't understand Italian - imagine saying that the food you had in a trattoria here was better than hers!
But I can understand why you love this ancient architecture - I do too, though Craig (macjake) might disagree.
A finely composed shot with lovely colours and light, perfect exposure and stunning details and sharpness.

TFS! Un abbraccio!

Ciao cara Lisa,
Bellissima vista sul Procida, sembra un presepe.Bellissima Campania!

Interesting for every inch of the hillside is covered in concrete and rock, with an ecclectic group of buildings.
California has urban hillside areas covered with houses and apartments also; just our earthquakes require frequent rebuilding or demolition.
Keep up the wanderlust and wonderlust, etc.,
CanmoreKevin (2111) 2012-05-14 18:51
I like the stacked geometric shapes. Great clarity and colours.
macjake (45588) 2012-05-14 21:29
well, i have to agree with a few things you said, and i have to disagree with a few. but thats ok.
You know i'm gonna like the new shinny glass buildings and modern architecture, but I also love the charming old historic buildings too! Really hard to find a building i don't like.
as for these buildings, its funny to see how old they are but yet some still have modern satelite dishes.
We often see that all around the world, it was also very common when i visited Tunisia.
And yeah, i do love this scene, especially the wires and poorly kept construction.
thanks for this one.
Still suffering from a bit of TE burnout, not critiquing my full 20 everyday, mostly just doing my paybacks.
Have a great one

Grande scuola TE.

I see how you miss Italy. Like you, I prefer these old buildings, even dilapidated, then the new shiny skyscrapers. I mean, to view them, probably not to live in. Amazing how they are built one above the other. Niot comfortable to walk. I wouldn't mind to have there un piatto di vongole con pomodorimm must be delicious.
ChrisJ (91286) 2012-05-15 1:05
Good sharpness & a wonderful, warm cold colour contrast, between the blue sky, & yellow ochre & salmon pink facades of the buildings. Superb upward pov terminating on the white cross, & nice graphism & perfect density (not oe or ue). The wispy clouds add interest to the sky. Tfs!
ashres (1453) 2012-05-15 9:29
Its such a wonderful place. The architecture is wonderful. Liked the sharpness and that feather-like cloud which is making this picture more beautiful. Nice shot.
vasilpro (40557) 2012-05-15 12:30
Wonderful cityscape composition, excellent POV, interesting architecture, beautiful church on the top, lovely light and colors, very good clarity and sharpness, TFS!
jusninasirun (17146) 2012-05-15 17:31
You are right about the old architecture h
that has strong characters. It is a shame really that they are being replaced by tall shiny buildings. This is a fine example of beautifully constructed dome and facade. You have captured the shot well exposing beautiful details against the blue sky.
Thanks and have a nice day.
jemaflor (74044) 2012-05-16 4:17
Nice composition, perfect in vertical version, interesting architecture and light but just a little tilt ...

Yes, I certainly wouldn't living in this area, delapidated maybe but it looks like an awesome place to live. Nicely captured with good lighting. Great pov and dof with nice details. Wonderful colors especially the sky. Well done, tfs.
Angshu (52890) 2012-05-18 3:23
Hello dear Lisa
Its quite amazing to see these old cities...signs of dilapidation are not THAT visible I must say, but yes the houses are not in the best of healths. In contrast the church looks quite new & swanky. Contrast against blue sky & the pastel colours are beautifully rendered!
Have a great weekend Lisa

another very interesting and fascinating image of this already well known place. Very beautiful colors and a fantastic light – and again there are so many fascinating details to discover. A great capture! I also enjoyed reading your nice note. My compliments!

Interesting perspectibe and nice point of view on the town.

I love your images from this unique place, to see the buildings stacked on top of each other like this is a treat. I see what you mean about crumling labyrinth too, some of them look to in a poor state of repair. The dome leads the eye right through, up and into your image. Beautifully done!
