Photographer's Note
ENGLISH: This is the royal palace of Naples, situated on the Piazza del Plebiscito. Along the facade of the palace are eight statues of the Kings of Naples, which illustrate its mixed history: Giocchino Murat, Charles III of Bourbon, Charles V of Hapsburg, Alfonso of Aragon, Charles of Anjou, Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, and Roger II The Norman. The statue we can see on the right is King Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy, sculpted by Francesco Jerace. He can be seen raising his sword in victory.
Neapolitans being the characters they are have their own humourous descriptions for each of the statues. With Victor Emmanuel raising his sword in victory, they have attributed the words, "Tagliammolo 'o pesce" which means "off with his "fish". Fish being a euphemism for an important male body part.
Some others are Charles V pointing at the ground saying "who pee'd on the ground right here?", Murat with his hand on his breast saying "who moi? I swear it wasn't me", Charles III looking down condescendingly saying "look at those disgusting pigs down there".

Buona domenica...

Foto splendida... e italiani e napoletani irriverenti con i Savoia in generale .
Un'Italia ...antica e quella di oggi.
Volere di classi che vogliono dominare .

Ha, ha, Lisa, sculpture done in all serious grandeur but brought down by the wit of the ordinary people! I like it!
You have captured the building with excellent clarity and from a pov, where the converging lines lead us very naturally and steadily to the very depths of the shot. A work of art in its own right.
have a lovely Sunday,
Bev :-)

Hi Lisa
another image of glorious Italian beauty! The perspective here is compelling and so effective. I love the detailing and the way the light makes the relief stand out so deliciously. I just wish I have more time and money to see these wonders first hand. Magnificent!
I wish you a peaceful Sunday - Brian.

Dear Neapolitanlisa,
A different and sharp angle to view the classical Neapolitan kings in dark lighting and eye catching.
Your 'revisionist' history is probably very accurate.
Yankee history is full of fiction and I like Neapolitan history better...
Roman history has a wealth of humans being humans, the good, bad and whatever. My favorite author is Seutonius from the early Roman Imperial era; wrote biographies on 12 successive Caesars, starting with Julius.
And in my youth, I knew to protect my "Pesce" when in a fight or imminent dangaer.
Have another fine weekend and new week,
Sincerely, cheers,
Ray

Ciao Lisa
Ouch! Good repetition of the columns & arches on the ground floor (do they have a ground floor in Italy? In Korea & China there is no ground floor, only 1st floor) The next 2 floors reinforce the repetition effect. Good sharpness & a nice warm cold colour contrast between the blue sky & reddish orange brickwork. Tfs!

Ciao cara Lisa,
Complimenti e grazie!
Tanti saluti, buona settimana,
Ourania

Hello Lisa,
I quite like the idea of using Victor Emmanuel as the focal point in the FG ,though I`m a little uncertain about the fish removal...
The imposing architecture is really well portrayed with a great felling of perspective created by the receding pillars and balconies.
Love the rich colours.
Best regards Les.

Ciao Lisa

Hi Bambina !!
I am glad that your are presenting photos from your trip in 2010. I went to Naples more than 40 years ago, and whilst I remember a lot, I am remembering more and better thank to your images.

Ciao Lisa,
What a wonderfully interesting and amusing note. It's great to know that Neapolitans can be just as irreverent as others the World over!
You have caught this beautiful building in the most stunning light - a light from the side which "models" or "sculpts" its features perfectly. The diagonal composition is excellent with fine use of perspective and the subtle colours of the building contrast well with the azure sky.
Perfect exposure and stunning details and sharpness.
Beautiful!
Kind Regards,
John.
