Il Santuario di Mompilieri, minacciato e in parte danneggiato dall’eruzione del 1537, è stato completamente sepolto dall’eruzione lavica dell’Etna dell’11 marzo 1669. Di fatto nel territorio di Mascalucia la località di Mompilieri non esiste più essendo stata distrutta.
La colata lavica incandescente raggiunse l’altezza di 11 metri seppellendo e liquefacendo case e pietre, lasciando prodigiosamente intatta, solo la statua marmorea della Madonna.
Costruito subito dopo il ritrovamento della statua della Madonna della Sciara, avvenuto il 18 agosto 1704, il primo agosto 1923 il Cardinale Nava, Arcivescovo di Catania, erigeva canonicamente al Santuario l’Oratorio di Mompilieri, col proposito di attrezzarlo ai livelli degli altri grandi santuari del mondo.
La Chiesa si trova in territorio di Mascalucia, paesino a 18 chilometri da Catania e 5 Km. da Belpasso e da Nicolosi.
Anche questo Santuario, come tutta la storia del territorio Etneo, è legato alla " Montagna Etna " ed alle sue eruzioni.
Non si conosce esattamente la data di costruzione dell’antica chiesa dedicata alla Madonna dell’Annunziata e situata poco distante dall’attuale chiesa. Tuttavia dalla bolla pontificia del 1382, che parla della successione di parroco, a Mompilieri, del sacerdote Francesco Mostacioso, possiamo dedurre che l’antica chiesa dell’Annunziata risalga al 1100 - 1200, forse come stazione dei templari, visto che nel territorio Etneo possedevano dei larghi appezzamenti di terreno. Spiegazione logica per il sorgere di questa grande chiesa, ma ipotesi comunque difficile da dimostrare.
Da scritti lasciati dal sacerdote Don Antonio Di Urso cappellano di Mompilieri e di Massa-Annunziata, datata 25 ottobre 1688, si legge che la nostra Chiesa Maggiore chiamata dell’Annunziata trovavasi quasi a principio del paese da parte della tramontana. La detta Chiesa dell’Annunziata era a tre navate e le volte erano sostenute da colonne di Sciara. La porta grande della chiesa guardava a levante ed era vicina alla strada che calava da Nicolosi. Nell’altare maggiore era posta l’immagine dell’Annunziata e, sopra un altro altare, l’immagine della Gran Signora Maria delle Grazie col Bambino Gesù in braccio.
Nel 1704 con nuova lena e vigore ripigliarono la escavazione di altri punti facilitata dalla devozione verso la Gran vergine Madre e dagli impulsi di persona la quale per celestiale rivelamento assicurava di non andare a vuoto l’operazione intrapresa..."
Si dimostrò non vana la rivelazione, l’immagine della Vergine Santissima delle Grazie è stata ritrovata sopra un altare nella sepolta Chiesa Maggiore dell’Annunziata, alla profondità di 8 metri di spessa e durissima lava.
Era il 18 agosto 1704, trentacinque anni dopo l’eruzione e fu posta nella Chiesa costruita (l’attuale santuario) sopra l’antica chiesa. Dalla data del suo prodigioso ritrovamento, la Madonna delle Grazie di Mompilieri, denominata in seguito Madonna della Sciara, è oggetto di culto da parte dei fedeli che accorrono ogni anno per celebrare il fausto evento. Inserito in uno scenario naturale incomparabile, che a primavera sembra risplendere dell’oro delle ginestre in fiore sparse in tutta la zona, il piccolo Santuario sorge in una vera oasi di pace. Dall’alto del suo piazzale, dal quale s’innalza una grande scala con altare di pietra lavica al centro, si scorgono le aree circostanti, su cui l’occhio spazia, oltre i tetti delle abitazioni, in lontananza, sparse sino alla vicina Catania e al mare dello Ionio.
