Photographer's Note

On 12 April 2010 a train derailed between Latsch and Kastelbell, near Merano, Italy, after running into a landslide, causing nine deaths and injuring 28 people. The front carriage was reported to have been left hanging over the Adige River, prevented from falling into the river only by two trees. The landslide which derailed the train is believed to have been caused by a burst irrigation pipe.

The Vinschgau railway line between Merano and Mals in German speaking Vinschgau valley was originally opened in 1906 and reopened in 2005 after over ten years of closure and full modernisation. It marked revival of efficient rail transport on this remote valley. The line uses state of the art 2-car diesel units built by Stadler in Switzerland. In the picture one of those class ATR 100 trains on the terminus station of Mals (in Italian language Malles Venosta).
