Photographer’s Note

Lago d'Orta, only 15 km long and 2.5 km wide, is separated from its more famous eastern neighbor, Lago Maggiore, by Monte Mottarone (1491 m).

The village of Orta San Giulio (pop 1200, elev 293 m) makes an excellent base for exploring the region, if you have a car.

In the center of the lake is Isola San Giulio, named for a 4th century Greek evangelist, Julius of Novara (Giulio d'Orta). The island measures 275 m by 140 m. The largest structure on it is the Basilica of Saint Giulio, built in the 9th century.
