Photographer’s Note

Il Foro Romano: This huge hand stands in the court of the "Palazzo dei Conservatori". It belonged to the statue of Emperor Constantine which used to stand in the Forum's basilica!

Constantine (272-306-337) was born in Serbia and is a very important figure of the 4th century; He was the 1st Roman Emperor to adopt the Christian Faith, and it was under his reign that ended the persecution of Christians. Moereover, he helped Christianity develop, by establishing the freedom of Faith, and by placing God above the role of Emperor , which was sacred until then.
He and his mother Helena are saints in the Orthodox Church.
He transformed the Greek city of Bysance and made it the capital of his oriental empire: Constantinople, Istambul nowadays.

I liked the humour of this guy on the photo, and the colours, especially this old ochre typical of Rome.
Again, it's a scan dating back to 1991, but I did want to share these few souvenirs I have from long ago in this beautiful sunny country!

PS. Jakab (Laszlo) has given me a different interpretation which I have to add here: "Surely, Constantine made Christianism legal in the Roman empire, but mainly because of imperial consideration (He himself was probably baptised just before his death.) Otherwise, he was one of the most ruthless dictators, restricting the rights of Jews, frequently changing and betraying his friends, killing his own son and wife etc..."

Longroute (Donato) agrees more with this second version: "If the Orthodox and the Catholic churches loved the truth rather than their own vanity, they would be ashamed to have a saint who was so bloodthirsty and disloyal."

I expect that as Christianity became more important in the early Middle Ages, they put Constantine on a pedestal, and forgot about his ruthlessness; and it has remained in the History pages for 1500 years.

On Marilyn's (Axiotea) advice, I have made a WS, cropping the bottom of the photo, in order to emphasise the Hand; I quite like it. What do you think? Thanks Marilyn!
