ITALIA - SARDEGNA - CAGLIARI - Torre di San Pancrazio

La Torre fu costruita nel 1305 da Giovanni Capula, già architetto della gemella Torre dell'Elefante, e deve il suo nome alla Chiesa di San Pancrazio, che in passato si trovava vicina. La Torre si trova su un colle ed era parte del progetto di difesa della città attuato dai Pisani. Tre lati sono realizzati in calcare bianco, mentre il quarto lato, rivolto verso il Castello, è aperto - come consuetudine delle torri pisane - e lascia vedere i quattro piani in legno. La Torre, alta oltre trenta metri, era circondata da una muraglia difensiva e da un fossato. Come la Torre dell'Elefante, anche questa venne utilizzata prima dagli Aragonesi come magazzino, una volta chiuso il lato aperto, e poi come prigione. Il restauro di inizio Novecento ne riaprì il lato murato, restituendo alla Torre le caratteristiche originarie. I lavori di rinforzo dei piani in legno ne hanno permesso l'accesso, così da poter osservare un ampio panorama della città.

The tower was built in 1305 by John Capula, former architect of the twin tower dell'Elefante, and owes its name to the Church of San Pancrazio, which previously was located nearby. The tower is located on a hill and was part of the defense of the city implemented by Pisani. Three sides are made of white limestone, while the fourth side, facing the Castle, is open - as usual Tower of Pisa - and showing the four-storey wood. The tower, more than thirty meters high, was surrounded by a defensive wall and a moat. Like the Elephant's Tower, this was first used by the Aragonese as a warehouse, after you close the open side, and then as a prison. The restoration of the twentieth century begins it reopened the walled side and returns to its original tower. Work on reinforcement of the wood planks have allowed access, so you can see a broad panorama of the city.
