Photographer’s Note

It's common knowledge that this beautiful city is sinking. Venice is built on top of millions of wooden piles that were sunk into the marshy ground about a thousand years ago, and the marsh is the problem. As to how fast these wooden posts are sinking remains up for debate; estimates are anywhere from seven to 24 centimeters per century.
