As I commented on my first posting of Venice, it's amazing how easy it is to find quite alleys and piazzas (though Paulo tells me that I should call all these little ones 'campos') off the main tourist routes. One of the most most accessible and interesting is 'The Ghetto'. The area just east of the railway station which designated as the place for Jews to live in the early 16th C. Not so much as a result of local racism, as to appease the Catholic church, which getting a bit twitchy about alternative religions in Europe at that time. EVERYBODY 'expected the Spanish Inquisition', (see my Monty Python theme if you don't get it).
This is the original Ghetto, which as given its name to any racially selective areas of any cities ever since.

morning richard, i do agree with fabio - it is probably the real venice, and it is always worth leaving the main tourist's tracks to find the "real thing" wherever you go;
this ghetto place seemd to be pretty abandoned, but the drying clothes (and the gondolas, of course) indicate that it is just an illusion
a very italian in a style,

Hi Richard, a good old image of a Venezia canal.
the scan procession lost something, as colors and contrast, but the perspective view and the light are really still amazing.
about the note, Venezia have only one Piazza, the San Marco one.
all the other are called Campi or Campiello.
Venetian people is proud of that thing linked with they old history , past and language! (one of my grandfather was born in Venice and lived there for more than 30 years before live in Milan for the rest of his life).

Venice is so photogenic, and you've captured its dignified yet crumbling beauty very well here Richard. Lovely light, colours and depth. Like your note too.

this is definitely a daily life photograph ... it's not often you get to see the drying socks and underwear side of such a beautiful and famous place like venice. i like the wires in the middle, it seems to connect your photo, pulling it all together. nice shot!

Although a touch over exposed for my liking this does show the oyher side of life in Venice. So often all we see are replica's of canaeletto's paintings with the palaces and churches. This shows where the real Venetians live.

Hi Richard, A very interesting capture of the Ghetto - it's a treat to examine all the architectural and daily life details. The diag compo was the way to go here.
...and thanx for the interesting note too.
Have a nice weekend,

Great pic, I like the daily life shot, it is a bit bright in some areas, but I like it overall

Good morning Richard,
La Serenissima at it's best...
The scenery off the normal way; severe traces of time combined with the typical charme only Venice can have.
Great view of the 'backyard'.

A superb daily life shot, with good reflections, & superb color. I like the strong compositional diagonal. Good work!

I agree with Fabio,
Im tired of the Grand Canale and the piazzas as they dont show the REAL Venice. And before Venice became the biggets open air museum it is now, it was a real city with real people and real problems. This photo shows that venice in a beautiful way.

The light above is so beautiful that I am under the impression that I can get inside the picture and walk around. Perhaps I should have written sail around. As a matter of fact I am about to go to Venice next week for the Carnival and this one inspires me a lot. If only I could find the light !
All the best Richard - Izzet
