Photographer's Note

The church of St. John the Baptist or Palatine Basilica stands on the archaeological Flaminii Forum, Roman municipality founded in 220 BC by the consul Flaminius and , according to tradition, destroyed by Liutprand in the eighth century . ( 1231 ), now under the name of San Giovanni Profiamma, village of Foligno. San Felicitino , the holy martyr of Foligno, was its first bishop. The church was built around 1231 by Master Philip, mostly with materials taken based on previous constructions .. Already basilica cathedral, built in the Romanesque style , on the ruins of an early Christian church of the sixth century . The façade, preceded by a small wooded area , is characterized by a rose window and a portal with a double ring to finely carved recesses . Tax arch capitals carved with the image of the Pope by Master Philip in 1231. The interior has a single nave , has the raised presbytery with a ciborium reconstruction . It contains fragments of Roman walls and a sarcophagus of the sixth century . The crypt has three naves with columns from Roman buildings containing a lintel decorated with symbols of the eighth century palocristiani . The basilica was the seat of the diocese. Forum Flaminii survives today as the seat holder since 1990 and is the holder Angelo Mascheroni, a former auxiliary bishop of Milan. Near the church of the late nineteenth hydraulic arrangements made to provide water power for mills grain oil still exist today.
