Summer Sunrise, Umbria, a photo from Terni, Umbria

Photographer's Note

Taken in early morning in late July and looking eastward from the grounds of our lovely agriturismo, Tenuta Pizzogallo, just a few kilometres south of Amelia.

I loved how the mist still hung in the valleys below the olive groves as the sun rose above the hills. This was a magical moment and I just hope I have managed to capture it at least to some degree.

Shot in RAW and converted and edited in PSE9.

this is a lovely atmospheric picture. the early morning mist mingled with the sun is fantastic, creating interest with the layers of trees and hills becoming visible.

Hi John - As you probably know, I am always drawn to landscapes and the early morning light captured in this shot is very attractive. I love the way the FG is sparkling with reflected light and this gently gives way to the misty soft colours of the hillside and valley. You have captured the magic and produced a shot of timeless appeal. Well done you! Warm regards rosemary

Hi John,
I like the contrast between the very clear foreground and the hazy background. The lawn and the fence provide a good frame for the olive trees and the forest. I have looked at the map view here, in what direction was this photo taken?

Hello John,
This I like a lot. There is something about mist and early morning sunshine that can transform a landscape into something special. You have caught that magic perfectly in this tyical Umbrian landscape. The fence I cannot make up my mind about. The light on the grass and fence is beautiful and is actually what caught my immediate attention. On the other hand it would be nice to see the beauty of the distant landscape without it. On balance I think you need that special light in the FG so unless you clone the fence out I think it has to stay!

Yes, a definite magic moment, captured so well and at such a magical time of the day. I truly wish I was a morning person, as the effort getting up early is well and truly worth it. A very suggestive image, the mist and the heat colliding beautifully. Yeah, there's a bit of OE in the top left hand corner, but it all adds to the magic of the moment. A very light soft grey-grad filter would have done some wonders here I reckon. Maybe for when you make a comeback to this spectacular place...

Hi John,

A very beautiful shot, I like very much the mornign atmosphere of misty air and foggy condition, I can also smell the cool and refreshing country side air. Ideally a fence is not always a good element to include in such pure and wonderful nature shot, but in this case it work just fine it is almsot needed since the rest of the landscape is rather light due to the misty condition. The fence and the foreground trees are darker and provide good contrast to the whole image. The golden light on the green lawn is beautiful.
