Gothic masterpiece Umbria Orvieto Cathedral , one of the greatest artistic achievements of the late Middle Ages, Italian , expressed at the highest level architectural solutions of the mendicant orders and figurative motifs of French Gothic , with a perfect harmony of lines in the original volumes and overcoming traditional Roman basilica .
The construction of the church was begun in 1290 by Pope Nicholas IV in order to give place to the worthy corporal of the miracle of Bolsena . First designed in the Romanesque style by an unknown artist (probably Arnolfo di Cambio) and then to the early fourteenth century Sienese sculptor and architect Lorenzo Maitani assumed the role of master builder of the work and enlarged in the Gothic apse and the transept and determined , despite not finishing it , the appearance of the facade we see today . The remarkable Chapel of San Brizio , decorated with a cycle of frescoes with Stories of the Last Days , which began in the sails by Fra Angelico and Benozzo Gozzoli in 1447 and completed by Luca Signorelli in 1499-1502
