The Bridge of Augustus is a Roman bridge located near Narni Scalo and formerly used to cross the gorge created by the Black River.
At the foot of the city of Narni, Terni after Gate along the Via Flaminia, one reaches, along the road of Funaro, just before the village of Stifone, near the Black River. This, taking the throat of Monte Corvo and Santa Croce, is to break the pillars of the Roman bridge of Augustus, who originally joined the two mountains.
Quoted from classical sources, depicted by artists and travelers, a true masterpiece of Roman architecture, is to be related to major restructuring wanted by Augustus in 27 BC, along the Flaminia road. Imposing the original structure remain two pylons on the bank of arched Monte Corvo, a section on the opposite side of Mount Holy Cross and the ruins of two towers central arch collapsed in 1855.
The original length of the bridge would be about 160 m to a height of 30 m, with a wonderful view of the central arch of about 32 m while the width of the roadway was 8 m. The front, made of cement core and facings of square blocks with ashlar courses and alternate, has (two-thirds of the pillars) a projecting cornice, which is found on the inside of the arch. The pylons have a rectangular plan and is partly set on rock.
Over time, has often been subject to landslides and severe damage, such as those dating back to 1053-54. It is assumed that the bridge stands on four arches, each with different width ranging from 19 m of the first 32 m central arch, about 17 m and 16 m of the third to the fourth, if it existed. According Guattani the stones were raised from a place called Valley Manteo at Civitella, at a time of Fiano; in 1724 was also discovered as the stones remained firmly connected to each other as well with lime, had been used for iron cores leaded firmly at their ends.

The back-light brings an air of mystery to this interesting composition. The massive arch makes a splendid frame for the dark landscape beyond. Well observed and presented.

Have a nice evening

Great POV of this magnificent roman engineering work. I'm always amazed on how these old structures can resist so much to the forces of time. Although we learn by your note that this one has suffered some harms during its centuries of existence.
Wonderful backlight shot.
