Abbey of Santa Maria di Valdiponte
The Abbey of Santa Maria di Valdiponte is an ancient Benedictine monastery located north of Perugia , which appear only in 1749 , for the first time , with the name of Montelabate resulting from a nearby castle , the name by which it is now commonly note.
Ancient and imposing Benedictine abbey overlooking the extensive grounds of the farm to which it belongs . Inside there is a beautiful cloister , which then leads to the ancient crypt , all'affrescata the Chapter Room and an impressive wine cellar housed in what was probably the lower church .
The date of foundation is uncertain , the first documentary evidence , in fact , date back to 969 : Pope John XIII, with a privilege, confirmation Abbot Peter the monastic properties and instructs him to restore and reform the monastery according to the ancient rule of St. Benedict and a document of 993 attests to the donation of land to the monastery of Santa Maria di Valdiponte , therefore , its foundation is definitely before 1000 . After the end of the Roman abbeys were an important point of reference for the population. The Abbey of Montelabate controlled about 40 parishes.
From the fifteenth century the abbey lost its independence and began the succession of abbots general partners , mere executors of the papal directions .
Towards the middle of the seventeenth century , Cardinal Filippo Monti will introduced the Cistercians , who restored the abbey life . In 1860 , however , with the unification of Italy , the Cistercians were expelled and the abbey was sold to the Marquis Doctors who transformed into a villa and farm. In 1959 it was purchased by Senator Gaslini and is still owned by the Foundation Gaslini in Genoa.

If it were not for the rose window one might think this abbey was some form of fortification rather than a place of worship. Your upward point of view certainly emphasises the massive architecture. The image is pleasantly lit and has very good colours and sharpness. Thanks for sharing the photo and the interesting accompanying note.

J'aime beaucoup le point de vue très vas qui donne beaucoup d'ampleur à cette vielle abbaye.J'aime les ombres sur le sol ainsi que la superbe lumière sur la façade.

250 years' history maybe not long enough to Italy. But it is very long by America's measurement. The soft light on the walls is very nice. I like this picture.

Complimenti e grazie!
Tanti saluti e buona serata,

Good choice of angle and POV to accentuate the height of this beautiful old abbey. Excellent framing. I like the contrast between the grassy FG, the abbey and the clear blue sky. Very well taken, thanks for sharing.

The tight frame is putting the abbazia in evidence. The point of view is showing the details and the colours of the architecture of the abbazia. It is clear and sharp. Have a nice day.
