Gavelli

On the slopes of Coscerno, mt. 1152 above sea level, on an ancient road that led from Sant'Anatolia in Monteleone di Spoleto. Certainly when the community settled there did not seem much more secure life in the bottom of the valley, after the invasion of the Saracens dell'890. Up there lived a quiet life, semi-independent town of Spoleto, with its Statutes.

In 1241 was one of the castles, who paid fodrum to Frederick II. but soon returned to Spoleto, where he remained essentially true. For its isolation was not easy to Ghibellines banned after 1324, settling in the castle. In 1361 and in 1490 is one of the castles in the district of Spoleto. The Neapolitan troops of King Robert, by the boundless kingdom of Naples, while the conductors of Henry VII and Ludwig of Bavaria, took possession of it, left him alone in 1340, after Spoleto, by an ambassador, Robert guaranteed to help riders of 500 and 1,000 gold ducats. On the door of the castle is the emblem of Spoleto. Was devastated in 1391 by Giovanni di Cola da Monteleone. In 1639 Urban VIII ordered the construction of the road Scheggino - Gavelli - Monteleone. In 1798 and was for many years and asylum and insurgents and bandits prey on those succeeded. With the Restoration was a small town with a mayor in the standard-bearer of Spoleto. It was closed in 1875 and aggregate to Sant'Anatolia. In 1712 the village had 136 inhabitants.

The church is dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel. Roof truss. The left wall is divided into four niches with remarkable frescoes. The first in Spain or the disciple John Brunotti painted: Madonna and Child with Angels, St. Francis and St. Anthony of Padua, St. Jerome (1524). In the Second, the Pietà, Calvary, the instruments of the Passion, St. Peter, the Handmaid, Pilate, Judas, etc. rooster.; Five saints: Augustine, Leonardo, Anthony Abate, San Sebastian and Bernard, a San detached Sebastiano Lo Spain. These paintings are of local teachers (1492). In the third niche you see: the Lord in the clouds and light, with adoring angels, the Virgin in the drum and many holy monks and hermits, author unknown. In the fourth niche: Virgin and Child with two angels and cherubs, the Baptist and Saint Sebastian, Spain and the work of The disciple Brunotti. The apse and Lo made Spain a bit 'in a hurry for the many committees who was Joan hispano pentore MDXVIII. represents the apparition of the Archangel Michael on Mount Gargano: the crowning of the Virgin and apostles, prophets, angels, saints and sibyls. Above the Eternal and the Annunciation in three rounds (of the students of The Spain), Holy Spirit, St. Augustine and St. Matthew. On the right wall is only one Madonna and Child with Saint Jerome, San Sebastian and other saints of the many votive Lo Brunotti and Spain (1523). Here, the great painter has left his masterpieces. This church is truly a treasure.

Hello dear Silvio, my neighbour today !
Another perfect capture which shows in every detail your photographer skills !
But my favorite detail here is the pink belltower, with a very nice light on it backed by a dark cloudy and stormy sky. Nice framing and many interesting and usefull notes.

what a fantastic, and very interesting compositoion. your viewpoint is superb looking through the archway which is so beautiful with all those ancient stones. it is almost a monochrone image, until you get through the archway and then the most wonderful colours are on show. the light is superb, and you have managed the whole scene very skillfully.

Outstanding clarity and depth. The two arches are sharp and detailed. The grey and white of the stone slabs have been wonderfully taken, as are the narrow paths. The contrast of the saffron and white belfry is as if an image has been coloured in a monochrome.
The blue and deep gray skies add to the contrasting mood of sun and shade.

This is one of the most dramatic of all the photos in your gallery, that are bursting with gems. The roadway, constricted by the Medieval Arch, leads the eyes naturally into the hills and magnificent stressed sky. The tiny aperture (f/18) has enable you to produce superb depth-of field.

This is a good example of breathtaking light management,and what a fine location this is,..seems like over the 100s of years nothing has changed,i love the yellow church tower in the midlle and the green hills in the bg.
at the moment Im listening to cello music from rossini,a super combination with this photo.
