CASTLE OF CISTERNA
The castle is situated on top of a hill at an altitude of 440 m above sea level surrounded on three sides by many valleys with a wide circle of 360-degree views of the Tiber Valley to the outer slopes west of Lake Trasimeno : Peglia mountain , Mount Amiata , Martan mountains and Serano . Built in the thirteenth century. in defense of the fertile valley of Puglia that dominates , after the destruction of a former fortress by Frederick Barbarossa, who was heading out of Spoleto as punishment for her rebellion. Perugino possession until 1378 , was the castle of the area with the highest number of fires; for the feast of St. Ercolano, the inhabitants had to send in Perugia three pounds of wax. In 1412 , the castle was bought by Ugolino III Trinci . Pope Gregory XII by Act of July 1412 , granted the castle in the vicariate Trinci, upon payment of an annual tribute , with the usual covenants of fidelity and administration of justice. In 1414 , central Italy and Umbria, were invaded by the troops of Ladislaus of Anjou, King of Naples. Ugolino III he agreed with the Florentines themselves under their jurisdiction. The castle remained in the hands of Cisterna Trinci until 1441 when their dominion ended ; at the time had 118 inhabitants . As a result of the ownership of the castle passed from one noble family to another ( Baglioni, Bennicelli , etc ...) and then remained under the protection of the archbishopric of Todi until 1980. In 1802 it was united with the town of Gualdo Cattaneo , then became part of the community S.Terenziano enfeoffed in Collazzone and independent since 1829 ; in 1861 it returned to Gualdo Cattaneo. At present is in fair condition, with the high medieval tower still visible , which is located adjacent to an inhabited nucleus of the nineteenth century . Today, most of the castle is used as a holiday - homes , a place of honor placed in a large Mediterranean forest with oaks, cedars , flowering ash , hornbeam , pines , oaks, arbutus , juniper and broom ; an almost pristine environment with full enjoyment of nature.
