Castle slope of the XIII-XIV sec. on the right bank of the river Nera. The most ancient settlement was built upstream of the town and were the remains of the walls of a church. Outside the entrance to the castle, the village has evolved with the typical case of a slope. His name, like that of the nearby villa of Cese in the town of Spoleto, probably derives from the Latin "CAED", that means cutting and weeding. Oral tradition attributes its foundation to the feudal lord chisel, the mythical origin of the medieval castle built to defend the feudal abbey of St. Pietro in Valle, assigned to the lords of Chisels, vassals of the dukes of Spoleto.
The urban is characterized by a central road that runs between the two winding access roads, and some semi-circular cross the dead-end, which radiate to the ancient walls, which still identifies the perimeter.
Outside the door to the valley has developed the first center of this town, which has gradually certificate along the carriage roads surrounding the town. Chisels was a separate municipality until 1875, when it was merged with the municipality of Scheggino.
At the top of the village is the church of S. Michele Arcangelo, built in the century. XIV using the tower as a polygonal apse of the keep, then transformed into a belfry. The building was remodeled and enlarged several times until it assumed its present appearance of the church nave with side altars. The arrangement nineteenth century, taking advantage of the pronounced drop of flatness, he emphasized the grandeur of the front preceded by a staircase. Of the parish dedicated to St. Sebastian, are still preserved frescoes of the XV and XVI in the apse wall and into the compartment of the tower.
Opposite Ceselli, on the other side of the ditch, stands the church of S. Vito, a small Romanesque building with a semicircular apse, double windows on the facade and bell tower. The interior is split into two rooms in the sec. XVI and XVII, with frescoes which mainly depict the patron saint, much invoked against rabies and then against the bite of dogs. Some structural elements of the Roman period bear witness to the seniority of an older building of pagan worship.
Near the town, after passing through the village of Contaglia, find the church of S. Sabino was built in the Romanesque period along the old road to Spoleto, on a hill used to use then the cemetery has also conquered part of the old building. The walls of the nave, which ends with a semicircular apse, preserving traces of frescoes, among which is a holy bishop, perhaps the owner of the church, former bishop of Spoleto and martyr, who lived in the third century.

little Italian towns shown on your photos have loads of charm and they seem just to wait to be photographed. This one sits nicely on the slope, like a bird in the nest surrounded by the hills. Nice scene and well presented with natural colors and proper framing.
Thanks for sharing

Ciao caro Silvio,
An interesting note and a delightful photograph of this beautiful village.
Your composition is excellent and I like the way you are looking down on the village and have excluded any sky from the composition. The light and colours are beautifully soft, your exposure perfect and the details and sharpness are exquisite.

A fine composition of this attractive hilltop village. I like the way the roof line follows an upwards diagonal from right to left. The light is very pleasant and the colours natural. Excellent sharpness throughout.

Altra chicca umbra, altro castello trasformato in borgo, altra bella e interessante condivisione.

This village is in a beautiful context with the surrounding nature, the houses are placed along a diagonal with the church forming a top of the live and also adding a red roof, as an accent. Beautiful!

A picturesque hilltop village with tightly clustered buildings effectively framed and composed leaving good breathing space right around. Nice sharpness and realistic looking colours & saturation. It looked like these hills have been scorched my wildfires at some point in the past. Tfs!

Complimenti e grazie!
Tanti saluti e buona serata,
PS Ho dimeticato di dirti che mi e' piacciuto molto quello che mi hai scritto su Maria Callas, lo capisco benissimo.
