San Gimignano es un pequeño pueblo amurallado de origen medieval, erigido en lo alto de las Colinas de la Toscana.

Este pueblo es muy famoso principalmente por su arquitectura medieval especialmente sus torres. En «centro histórico de San Gimignano» ha sido declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en el año 1990.

La muralla medieval de San Gimignano tiene forma irregular y se adapta al terreno elevado en el que se asienta la villa. Posee cinco puertas y todas ellas se conservan. Las dos puertas principales son las de San Giovanni, al sur, y la San Matteo, en el noroeste de la muralla. Las tres puertas restantes se ubican en el oeste (Porta Quercecchio) y en el este (Porta San Jacopo y Porta delle Fonti) del recinto amurallado.

La muralla de San Gimignano presenta, en general, un buen estado de conservación, con partes restauradas y algún lienzo desaparecido.

San Gimignano is a small walled town of medieval origin, built atop the hills of Tuscany.

This town is most famous for its medieval architecture especially its towers. In "San Gimignano's historic center" has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1990.

The medieval walls of San Gimignano is irregularly shaped and adapted to high ground where the village sits. It has five doors and all of them are preserved. The two main gates are San Giovanni, south, and the San Matteo, on the northwest wall. The three remaining gates are located in the west (Porta Quercecchio) and east (Porta San Jacopo, Porta delle Fonti) of walls.

The wall of San Gimignano has generally good condition, restored with parts missing and some canvas.
