The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italian: Torre pendente di Pisa) or simply The Tower of Pisa (La Torre di Pisa) is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa. It is situated behind the Cathedral and it is the third structure by time in Pisa's Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square).

Although intended to stand vertically, the tower began leaning to the southeast soon after the onset of construction in 1173 due to a poorly laid foundation and loose substrate that has allowed the foundation to shift direction.

The height of the tower is 55.86 m (183.27 ft) from the ground on the lowest side and 56.70 m (186.02 ft) on the highest side. The width of the walls at the base is 4.09 m (13.42 ft) and at the top 2.48 m (8.14 ft). Its weight is estimated at 14,500 tonnes. The tower has 296 or 294 steps ;the seventh floor has two less steps on the north-facing staircase. The tower leans at an angle of 3.97 degrees[1]. This means that the top of the tower is 3.9 meters from where it would stand if the tower were perfectly vertical.[2]

Hello Salvator,

Interesting how over time this tower became famous due to this engineering error. Excellent image with very good light and colours. The subject is interesting and the image well composed. I woder if the tower has been stabilizied now so it won't lean anymore. Cheers!

Hi Salvator,
Very spectacular shot for the Tower of Pisa with splendid composition. I like the rich and decorative architectural details and the attractive sky. Very well done! Have a nice day

Nice composition of this famous place!

Usually at photos somebody stays in foreground and places one's hands or a back as if one is supporting the tower and not allowing it to collapse :)

Merhaba Salvator,

This truly is one of the finest, cleanest shots of the great bell tower. In Chapter 3 of the new book, "Leonardo's Universe," I had the publisher integrate a similar shot of their own into the book, demonstrating with vertical lines the distances that Leonardo, and separately Galileo determined for a falling body. With this dramatic sky, relatively underpopulated landscape, I would have suggested to the publisher (National Geographic) to ask for your photograph. I love this image. Indeed, it is so beautiful, I would love to use it in some of my lectures demonstrating the 'Law of Free Fall.' Would you consider making available a high resolution form for this, that I would always credit you with.

Warm regards, Salvator,

Bulent

Salvator,
This is a nice shot of this iconic tower. The low angle lighting worked perfect for you here giving the tower nice warm lighting and colors. The photo has great sharpness and DOF which yields nice detail.

Selam sevgili Salvator,
MESUT ILGIM

Geia sou Salvator,
the world wide famous and known monument the leaning tower of Pisa, one more time in front of our eyes.Excellent colours and warm afternoon light that fall on it's left, make it more attractive. The people are so tiny in front of this altitude. Informative your note too.

Regards,danos

Hello Salvator.
A very simple, full-on shot that works because it is a very good exposure and your upload is high quality. The proportions are pleasing and the sky is wonderful. I like the gentle light on the tower, too, on the upper half. It looks like some of those small trees are leaning in sympathy!
Regards,
Andrew

Are the people there not afraid of the drooped tower?!-:))
An other nice illuminated photo with all the technical sides they are very good.
Have a nice evening.

Sevgili Salvator
Benim kentimden yedi yıl kaldığım yerden harika bir fotoğraf yollamışsın. Ellerine sağlık. Bilmiyorum şimdi nerdesin ama eğer halen oralarda tozluyorsan mutlaka Marina di Pisa ve Tirrenia isimli sahil kasabalarına git Viareggio 'yu da unutma. Mükemmel bir torre pendente fotoğrafı. Harika tonlar. tebrikler ihsan

Hello Salvator,
The light all over tells me that you have struggled a lot with the weather. However you managed to have some on the leaning tower, and it shows so well, because of the general mood with the clouds behind it. A very classical nevertheless an excellent one: Don't forget to tilt your frame when hanging the picture on your wall.

I wish you a great week-end - Izzet
