I’ve mentioned the bicycles of Lucca before; to me they are synonymous with the lovely old walled town. The bikes in this shot are for hire. The wooden boxes on front gave them an individual and rustic appeal.

a real feeling of life at a slower pace and lots of character to make this an "only in Italy" type image. It has a distinctly arty feel about it this shot - I like it!

Lucca is one of my favourite Italian towns and the sight of so many people of all ages riding bikes is a fond memory.
I do like this photo with what looks like fruit boxes to hold goods on the bikes.

I'm afraid they would be of no use to me as I can't ride a bicycle:-( Having said that, grouped here together they make an interesting photographic subject with their unusual wooden boxes. I like the close cropping and the fairly limited tonal palette.

This is very different from the beautiful rural sceneries of Toscana and Namibia, but I really like photos that are not quite mainstream. Rental bike are common sights in a lot of cities these days, but I have never seen any with this kind of wooden boxes. I can't think of any other purpose than using them for your daily purchases of wine. I guess you will need to buy 24 bottles at a time to keep them safely stored.

for me it is a joy to see that the bicycle, the most nobel of all forms of transport, is cponquering the world,
Thanks for sharing this heartwarming collection.

I have often wondered what the collective noun is for bicycles but can only find suggestions like 'straddle', 'tangle' or 'smogless movers'! I think we will call them a tangle of bicycles! It fits well in this instance!
Lucca is a perfect place for this form of transport, no hills and most of the traffic parked outside the walls.
The wheels and the boxes make a very irregular if interesting pattern, contrasted by the regularity of the textured pavement. In fact there are lots of lovely textures!
This is almost monochrome and would probably be just as effective in b&w.
One of my favourite photographs was of a bike in Lucca. It may amuse you if you can find it!
My warm regards,

I guess that this is just so typical of Italy - those bicycles all lined up for hire and fitted with rather quaint wooden boxes above their front wheels. In fact, those look like wooden wine boxes to me - maybe they are?
A lovely photograph, almost monochrome save for a few little splashes of colour here and there, with lovely light, poerfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

This is a very attractive composition with the bicycles and the wooden boxes attached to them. The perfect exposure has brought out the various repeated shapes and textures in a very good way and we almost get the feel of a lovely monochrome treatment which has worked well for this picture.
The boxes could be used for carrying grocery, or, as Gert would prefer, two dozen wine bottles :).
Thanks for sharing and have a great day.

Yes, I like your words and I'd like to say I like your idea to make it in sepia. Good colors management, it looks like a old document photo from 1950th or just a movie scene. Fellini ;)
Perfect composition, fine details!

Saluti a tutti voi e buona gita in Inghilterra

a fine presentation of this gathering of bikes. I like very much how interesting and vibrant the details look in this tight frame and that the arrangement of the bikes isn't neat and orderly. They look like children or young people looking forward to an exciting experience, impatient to move on. The textures make an effective contribution to the scene, the tonal treatment is marvelous as it has exalted the details and rendered the atmosphere timeless. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,

An interesting photo of this pride of bikes with their new boxes. I like the tight cropping so that there are no extraneous distractions. It might be a good photo for a B&W treatment because it would have a good tonal range, (I think).

J'aime beaucoup cette ville que j'ai visitée à plusieurs occasions, même si j'avais tendance à m'y perdre dans ses dédales de rues étroites.J'aime beaucoup cette image qui me fait penser automatiquement à l'Italie.

Hey now Rosemary: that's the business! A lovely, simple street scene, with well-seen repeated patterns, nice and tightly framed. Realistic colour!! I love it!

An aspect that I find appealing in the photo are the wheels circles and ellipses with different eccentricities. Along with the wooden crates, it is the variations in the wheels that standout. Wonderful shot!

L'originalité de ces vélos sont ces boites en bois qui remplace normalement un panier, oui cela donne un côté rustique et particulier

Hello, Rosemary, what a pleasure to find that you are in Italy!
I've been in France for 3 months, UK for three weeks, and am finally getting my photos organised.
This one is a textural delight with the varied patterns of stones on the wall and the pavement but what caught my eye first was the wonderful asymmetrical composition, plus the almost sepia effect of the colors. Unusual to see the bikes just sitting casually like this, as opposed to Paris where they are neatly lined up and locked in little "frames" or whatever you call those bicycle-holding thingies...
All the best, Sara

Love the treatment here giving that rustic, old-fashioned look. The bikes look very practical with their large boxes. An excellent image that has been beautifully and thoughtfully produced.
Best wishes, Ann
