I mentioned in a previous post how bicycles will remain one of my abiding memories of Lucca and how, due to the narrow streets and lack of parking facilities within the medieval walls of the town, bikes seem to be the preferred mode of transport.
Here I was actually intended taking a shot of the brightly painted green door when, to my delight, a girl with a pink bike rode up and stopped. I think she probably lived in the building. The colour contrast was too good to miss.

Frankie Vaughan springs to mind though he didn't have a pink bike, must be showing my age:-) Lovely impromptu capture. Love the colour contrasts and the shadow play offered by the shutters. Excellent rendering of the textural detail.

This girls must have been sent from heaven. Her presence, and the bike's, makes this picture outstanding among the thumbnails. Recovering from the "colour shock" of green and pink (and ginger hair) I discover that the plain wall is not so plain after all. There are lots of details to enjoy. A very nice photo with well handled light and superb sharpness.

thank you, I'm fine, I hope you are too!
For some time I have not posted photos, I was in a pilgrimage to the Mount Athos.
In the meantime, you've posteded some interesting photos from Tusvany, this I like best. It remind me of one of mine, made about a year ago, also in Tuscany.
When I visited Tuscany it was yellow, not green, so your photos are more interesting to me!

Serendipity, springs to mind, strange isn`t it how sometimes things just come together and it has worked ever so well for you here, the red bike being the final touch to scene full of texture and bright contrasting colours.
You have handled the harsh light very well.
Kind regards Les.

Hello Rosemary. What a nice sidelight on this facade. The door, the windows, the lamp, - everything is beautiful and worth seeing. And I particularly like that the cyclist brings life into the scene. Overall excellent technical quality.

Well this really couldn't be anywhere else than Italy, could it? And you have captured the scene perfectly - and how lucky you were that this girl and her pink bicycle arrived while you were composing your shot!
As well as the subject matter, it is the lovely oblique lighting which makes this one so special. The light picks out all the detail in the flaking paintwork and the crumbling stucco of the building and also brightly illuminates the pink bicycle, the rich green door and also the girl's hair. And, of course, perfect exposure and stunning sharpness as always.

Ces façades italiennes un peu défraîchies sont toujours un plaisant sujet photographique. la présence de la jeune fille à la bicyclette apporte un plus à la composition.

Plenty of things to look at inside the frame: colors, texture, the door, the bicycle, the woman, the shadows...
We can spend a long time only to try to discover new elements inside.

Ah yes, you couldn't have directed a better movie scene! How fortunate that this colourful lady and her bike walk in front of the colourful door. I love these scenes where no one else, no matter how well they travel the same town, will get the same shot. The peeling paint on the wall, the textures and vivid colours work so well together. Excellent work, thanks for sharing.
Warmest wishes, have a lovely day

like this one a lot. It is the strong shadows and rustic feel of this place that makes it both arty, appealing and full of character. A real photographers image this! Well done.
Have a good week - B.

Excellent old house façade close-up photo with very nice colors, perfect light, very good clarity. The lady with the bicycle adds nice life to the scene. Nicely arranged in portrait format. The well-chosen tight crop eliminates all unwanted distractions.

J'aime bien cette photo prise sur le vif. On se demande bien ce que la dame fait devant cette porte avec sa belle bicyclette rouge. Les couleurs ressortent très bien.

A terrific capture of the girl and her pink bike against that green door and lovely, interesting building facade.

Lovely scene. I like so much of these colors and the composition too. Very atractive picture.

Yes, the brightly painted door is very attractive byt with the girl with red hair and pink bike it is even more charming. I see that it was quite cold that time. Lovely old dilapidating walls. And what I always like - such window shutters. In Poland there is not enough sun to have them.

haha...i was shocked to see how close people park their cars to each other...how do they get OUT of the parking space is what I want to know!!
you mentioned you liked the green door here, I personally like the blue window shutters and the crusted wall on the left. many photogenic features in this one small scene, charming and cultural too.
about the Duomo...we waited in line for about 1 hour, not too bad considering we didn't have any special pass..it worked out well. I'll be posting a photo of that lineup soon :) Its a fun photo

Very nice your series "Italian"! Here I really like how you composed the picture, with door, window and street lamp bike! Beautiful also the light that saturates the colors well. The next time you come in Italy made to feel, maybe we'll see!
Best Regards, Nino.

I saw this and I think commented on it elsewhere, Rosemary, but a longer reaction is called for here! A really great and eye-catching daily life shot with contrasting bright colors in the door and the bike, but I'm so glad you looked beyond that to catch the full vertical frame here, because those character filled shutters really make the image! I'm curious which you saw first; did you see this girl at the door and grab the camera, or did you already have your eye on the house when she arrived?
annjackman (21813) 2014-07-13 6:24
What a piece of luck having the lady and bicycle turn up. The bright pink and the glossy green door contrast with the typical battered exterior of the building.
Very well seen and taken.
Kind Regards, Ann
p.s. Rich is now free at the end of August so hopes to meet up
