Sovana, charming village where time has stopped, rare jewel of medieval town planning was a flourishing Etruscan center from the 7th to the 3rd century BC.

Suana is the original name given by the Romans, after their conquest of the territory of Vulci in 278. C. The name derives from "suf" which means "green earth". Important Roman city and a bishopric since the dawn of Christianity, it was later conquered by the Lombards and reached its zenith in the thirteenth century under the rule of the Aldobrandeschis, whose Duchy came to understand the whole province of Grosseto. It then passed to the Orsini Family by inheritance was looted and destroyed by the Sienese in 1410. In the mid-sixteenth century the final fall of the Republic of Siena Sovana brought into the hands of the Medici, the inglobarono in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
