Sorano is a town of 3,602 inhabitants in the province of Grosseto . Of ancient Etruscan origin , the medieval village of Sorano, in the center of the "lands of tufa" , is perched in a picturesque way of a steep tufa cliff and extends to the foot of the fourteenth-century Rocca Orsini , one of the most impressive facilities of military engineering of the time.
Feature of the village is a maze of alleys, courtyards , arches , portals ashlar , exterior stairs , balconies and cellars dug into the tuff.
Little news of the Etruscan period and the findings are modest , Sovana , now village of Sorano, in the Etruscan city was much more important and above it politically .
The first historical documentation related to the center of Sorano date back to the third century .
