Good evening Rosemary
Good to go outside with a camera when it is raining, provide you have a shelter: roof, raincoat, umbrella; in the last case, you have a queer look for the other photographers!
I like the blurred raindrops and the rounds made on the wet ground
Nice B&W conversion.

A superb rainy day picture. I like the clarity of the woman in the FG with the people further back less distinct because of the heavy rain and shallow DOF. The b/w conversion suits the subject very well.
Kind Regards, Ann

I am sure you knew what you were doing when you converted this to B&W, otherwise the umbrellas may have looked very colourful, especially considering the general greyness of the day. The nearest one looks very interesting, for instance. But if you decided this treatment it was probably the best option. The result is very good in any case, and I enjoy watching the nearest woman who looks so determined to continue her sightseeing no matter what.

Wonderfull b&W capture of this scenery under heacy rain in Florence.
Good pov and layout.
Rain seems to be our faith this summer. Today we had nonestop heavy rains in İstanbul since early morning hours.
TFS and best regards

This is yet another lesson of which to take heed: don't put your camera away just because it happens to be raining. Because so often when it rains the light becomes much softer and more conducive to good photography and (although we don't see it in this black and white photograph) objects usually display more vibrant colours when they are wet.
Your use of a relatively slow shutter speed has enhanced the visual effect of the rain - we can see the drops falling as vertical lines and we can see the splashes in the puddles from them too. And a relatively wide aperture has also put the distant view in soft focus so that our attention is captured by the young lady in the foreground who, despite the inclemency of the weather, appears determined to catch that special shot.
I love it!
parvatibb (1387) 2014-08-07 12:54
Superb B&W presentation. The rain drops looks like sketches. The picture on the woman’s umbrella looks like mirror with reflections. But I wouldn’t want to be in her position. I know rain and puddles give nice reflections but still not in my holiday:)

quella donna non è la sola ad essere determinata, lo è anche la donna che ha scattato questa foto...
Ottima versione in b&w, perfetta per questa situazione, dove, nonostante il tempo, sei riuscita a tirare fuori un bellissimo lavoro.

Hi Rosemary, not the best weather for a daily trip in Firenze, but a great opportunity to take a very original pic,the rain doesen't stop the tourist, and you caught the moment in a great way and in a magic black and white,i like it! Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Ciao Rosemary :)
What a bad luck to have rain in Florence. But it happens. and rain or not, we have limited time in the city according to schedule, so we must go for sightseeing. I mean, I would go even without umbrella of raincoat. The girl in fg is well protected :). Good option to show it in b&w. Beautiful shot.

Tu n'as pas hésité à sortir ton Nikon dans ces conditions très...humides....et le résultat montre que cela valait le coup. Une photo noir et blanc de très belle qualité!

With this post you propose us a superb new view of Florence. I don't know how many raining days there are during a Calder year but I am pretty sure that this one was one of only a few so this is an unique scene. Beautifully observed and presented in b&w.
Have a nice day!

Hello Rosemary. An interesting photo with great contrasts, the best light and beautiful reflections. Rainy days are really ideal for photographers.
Best rgds, Wolfgang.

Looks very similar to a day we experienced during a short stay in Milan, except that there are no Japanese tourists in evidence:-) I like the composition, which perfectly suits the black and white treatment. Love those glistening pavements. Good use of differential depth of field putting the lady in the foreground as the dominant subject.
timecapturer (49288) 2014-08-08 5:33
a wonderful study this, full of the character and dedication that tourists have when sightseeing. The use of B&W is inspired because it captures the atmosphere so perfectly. Fascinated by this lady's umbrella, it looks like it is reflecting the very thing she is photographing which is both intriguing and adds a touch of mystery. Original and wonderful capture Rosemary - I love it!
Have a great weekend - B.

This looks wet, wet, wet! I think that your choice of B&W makes this picture look even wetter. A fine daily life picture!
PiotrF (23138) 2014-08-08 9:37
A amazing rainy day picture. This is a composition that draws attention indeed.
Beautifully presented in b&w.
abmdsudi (58260) 2014-08-08 10:16
The monochrome I feel portrays the wet weather and the mood better, perhaps why the image is converted to mono is evident here. We can give more attention straight to faces as other things become not-so-interesting without the color, because expressions are a great part making this shot work. Good observation and timely shot. Congrats, tfs
williewhistler (16496) 2014-08-08 11:04
I do like your choice of mono for this well seen shot, the slight toning is lovely.
All of the people are nicely distributed throughout the frame and whilst I do enjoy the brollies I think that it`s those little circles where the rain has landed that I enjoy most.
A fine rainy day photo.
Kind regards Les.

There is no bad weather, only bad clothing as we say over here. The rain can often provide us with the most astonishing motifs and to me pictures taken in the rain are mostly more interesting than just blue sky shots.
The young women in the foreground takes deservedly center stage in this composition, well equipped for the downpour she doesn't let the rain interfering with her photography. Lovely shot indeed.
have a great weekend
jcpix (13950) 2014-08-08 20:24
A delightful study in human behavior and dedication to those with a camera. Despite the elements, it's often tough to resist capturing the moments and places we come across, and you have certainly collected a fine compilation of people in action on this gloomy day....weather-wise that is, I'm sure being there to enjoy the wonders of Florence is well worth a little rain. :) Good choice of black & white, I think it renders more of a nostalgic charm, even though modern day technology has people taking pictures with their phones!? lol Have a great weekend. Take care.

Ciao Rosemary, non è vero che per fare una bella foto ci vuole il sole, deliziosa composizione, bravissima, ciao Silvio
boa (7715) 2014-08-10 9:48
I guess i am not very active when it is raining, but this shot proves that rainy situations can be quite successful! Color or B&W, i think both options works good here. You have captured the facial expression in the fg very well, she looks concentrated to get a good shot. Nice rings from the raindrops on the ground and a general good impression, tfs!
Have a nice evening/
krzychu30 (15512) 2014-08-10 23:31
rain can be a really nice addition for photographers-ok.maybe not during our whole holiday:)
This is great capture and good example, that rain should not deter us from sightseeing.
And I like your B&W edition, which makes the scene really classy!
Have a good day
photographer_sg (4414) 2014-08-11 10:02
This is another beautiful picture with perfect choice of monochrome and superb use of the vertical format. The woman in the foreground makes a great subject and you have captured her features and expression with fine clarity. I like the play on dof here. The other figures nicely balance the composition.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy your evening
macjake (73059) 2014-08-12 10:23
is that really a reflection on the inside of the Umbrella?
I have never ever seen that before.
this is quite the photo Rosemary!
I applaud you because i hate taking photos in the rain, this is one i certainly wouldn't have captured myself.
kasianowak (10591) 2014-08-13 1:20
Beautifully captured street scene. I know how difficult it is to take well composed images of a group of people you cannot control but you did a great job here and came up with a lovely graphic image. I also really like the rain puddle you included in the bottom left corner with the surface showing the effect of falling rain drops.
Great idea to convert it to b&w.
Reminds me of all those days when I took photos in the rain (I usually use the "tripod and umbrella" technique). :-)
GyurMaster (7611) 2014-09-04 14:27
You have shoved me your new side with these BW pictures. I think all of them is well composed and processed excellently, but this one is my favourite among them. Nice, cosy genre.
willperrett (11918) 2014-09-12 4:21
Sorry I missed this one in your portfolio. It's a fine shot, with a certain humour, and the acute observation of a Cartier-Bresson image. Hope it didn't rain like that for too long. It's good that you saw the potential for an image in conditions where most of us I'm sure would have packed up and headed for the nearest bar!
