Church of San Lorenzo

The church of San Lorenzo is a sacred building that is located in Via Santa Croce 2 in Sansepolcro .
It was built in 1556 along with the adjoining monastery to accommodate the Benedictine nuns left without home after the killing of the villages outside the new city walls ( 1554 ) , in the place already occupied by the Brotherhood of the Cross and the Hospital of Santa Maria al Fondaccio .
The facade has an elegant sixteenth century portico that runs partly on the left side .
The interior retains the high altar a masterpiece of Mannerist painting , The Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Rosso Fiorentino ( 1528 ), topped by a bezel of Raffaellino del Colle with God the Father Blessing ( 1527 ) .
After the Napoleonic suppression of the monastery was transformed Orphanage female Schianteschi and subsequently also the Nursery School Names - Collacchioni was housed in the building.
In the two structures , from 1919 to 1984 , have served the Sisters of Charity , said of Maria Bambina .
Today it is home to an office volunteer for immigrants and a home for the elderly run by the Diocese , involving many of the Franciscan Sisters of Mercy.
