La Verna
In this rough and rocky mount the Saint of Assisi went to pray and do penance. Here, in September 1224, St. Francis received the stigmata
The shape of the Sacred Sasso La Verna, a sort of large "dent" on the Apennine ridge, appears to be unique throughout the whole valley of Casentino. Frame the Sanctuary wonderful forests of beech and fir.
The Sanctuary is situated in the southern part of Mount Penna at 1128 meters high, the first nucleus hermitage dates back to 1213, when St. Francis had the gift of the mountain from Count Orlando of Chiusi della Verna.
