It arises in the oldest sagrada area of Palermo. In 1184 the archbishop of Palermo, Gualterio Offamilio, ordered that the construction of a great cathedral was undertaken. In the successive centuries, additions and restorations modified the original building. Particularly beautiful it is the part of the apses, the unique one that has conserved the original forms of century XII.

The temple is a magnificent example of the Norman architecture. The facade is flanked by towers and small columns and is united to the bell tower by ogival arcs. In the decoration of the interior of the temple, as well as in the two gothic towers that are united to the bell tower by two bridges, the influence of the Arab style is perceived. The interior of the temple lodges the denominated Real Imperial Tombs, between which they emphasize 4 coffins: the one of Roger II, Henry I SAW of Hohenstaufen, Constance de Hauteville and Frederick II of Hohenstaufen.

Also sculptures of Gagini and one can be contemplated cripta of century XII. The Treasure to the Cathedral in that can be visited in addition they emphasize a tooth of Santa Rosalía, one of the holy employers of Palermo, and its ashes, which they keep in a ballot box of silver, in one of the chapels of the Cathedral. Among others pieces of the Treasure it is necessary to emphasize a gold tiara of Certainty of Aragon.

Surge en la más antigua área sagrada de Palermo. En 1184 el arzobispo de Palermo, Gualterio Offamilio, ordenó que se emprendiera la construcción de una gran catedral. En los siglos sucesivos, añadiduras y restauraciones modificaron el edificio original. Particularmente bella es la parte de los ábsides, la única que ha conservado las formas originales del siglo XII.

El templo es un magnífico ejemplo de la arquitectura normanda. La fachada está flanqueada por torres y pequeñas columnas y está unida al campanario por arcos ojivales. En la decoración del interior del templo, así como en las dos torres góticas que se unen al campanario por dos puentes, se percibe la influencia del estilo árabe. El interior del templo alberga Las denominadas Tumbas Imperiales Reales, entre las que destacan 4 sarcófagos: el de Roger II, Henry VI de Hohenstaufen, Constance de Hauteville y Frederick II de Hohenstaufen.

También se pueden contemplar esculturas de Gagini y una cripta del siglo XII. Se puede visitar además el Tesoro de la Catedral en el que destacan un diente de Santa Rosalía, una de las santas patronas de Palermo, y sus cenizas, que se guardan en una urna de plata, en una de las capillas de la Catedral. Entre otras piezas del Tesoro hay que destacar una tiara de oro de Constancia de Aragón.
