Photographer’s Note
The Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele in Palermo opened its doors to the public on the evening of 16 May 1897, twenty-two years after the solemn public ceremony of the laying of the first stone.
Over the entrance there is this statement:
L'arte rinnova i popoli e ne rivela la vita
Vano delle scene il diletto ove non miri a preparar l'avvenire.
which means
Art brings renewal to the people and reveals life to them
Vain is delight in the stage where it does not aim at preparing the future
