Royal Palace of Turin or Palazzo Reale, is a palace in Turin, northern Italy. It was the royal palace of the House of Savoy, built for the Madama Reale Christine Marie of France in the seventeenth century.
Turin, today the capital of Piedmont, was a capital of the House of Savoy from the 12th to the 19th centuries and the Royal Palace contains much evidence of their aristocratic lifestyle. The royal family resided in the palace from 1645. Its rooms are decorated with rich tapestries and a collection of Chinese and Japanese vases. The Royal Armory houses an extensive array of arms, including examples from the 16th and 17th centuries.
This image shows one the the entrance ornamental statues.
Tech note: I tried to simulate what was the technique of the artists to colorize old images of an age when there were no colors. I remember to see some of my grandparents' post cards and although the result was not quite real, I always enjoyed the purpose of bring some of the colors to the monotones. Those images have an interesting atmosphere. Well, of course the process in photoshop is much more easier and cleaner than the chemistry but it still takes some time for a convicent result (not natural but similar to the old process).
I basically desaturated the original image. Using the b&w version, I worked on layers, masks, curves and color tones to create the desired colors. The original one was used only as the reference for the colors. At this time, no lens distortion adjustment.
Hope you like it.

I'm impressed by the tecnique you used for the pp! It's a great result and once agin the result you've delivered here is excellent.
Compo works well with the staute dominating the stage and the Palazzo Reale in the bg is the ideal complement to finish with style a truly beautiful picture.
See you soon my friend

Bruno40 (6658) 2007-12-27 19:06
IMpressive PP work, but I have to admit that in these cases I prefer teh B&W version.
Good work Carlos!

interesting subject for such work, well documented with the original and b&w version. I like the clear and simple view, presenting the statue and the architecture with good lines and structure. The good contrasts support the view guided by the lines.

Ola Carlos, I can imagine it could be better framed.
The clearness-sharpness and contrast are superb.
paura (47186) 2007-12-28 1:46
A arquitetura é linda e o lugar idem. Beleza de fotografia, amigo.

I like a lot how your frmaing choices anhences the statue an architecture.
Beautiful, sharp, nice colors.
syd1946 (18663) 2007-12-28 3:32
I like very much the way you composed this image from the low pov to avoid the streets and the people. It gives another sense to an architecture shot.Your note is very informative and helpd very much to enjoy more!
All the best and happy new year!
pablominto (53746) 2007-12-28 3:41
This is a well balanced composition!
I like the feeling of depth, and the point of view gives fine lines...
Good sharpness all over the frame, in spite the f/5.6!
jlbrthnn (76037) 2007-12-28 4:01
I like the superb construction of the image with the architectural geometrical forms which surround this beautiful work of art. Very beautiful work.

The pp gives a gave a good result to this image which is well framed. I like the architectural details and the posture of the statues giving a dynamic impact!
molla (7129) 2007-12-28 5:18
that was a different way of postediting a picture by first taking away then adding back but different... I have to admit that the result is even better than the original
Charo (51210) 2007-12-28 5:20
Magnífico encuadre con gran contraste de arquitecturas.
Estupenda definición y colores.
Feliz Año Nuevo!!!
Floydian (30970) 2007-12-28 5:27
Absolute this colour version. Although the colours are not bright here, it shows more impacht on the buildings and the statue.
If you really want to know how to paint colour in b&w pictures i have a nice movie for you ;-)
ktanska (26809) 2007-12-28 5:52
Very interesting work, especially compared to original colour version. Results are quite convincing. That makes me think that on human built environment the objects often have one basic colour and texture is created on varying brightness. Impressive, and no doubt needed a lot of work anyway.
cfreire (11741) 2007-12-28 8:46
As cores ficaram harmoniosas. Um abraço, Consuelo
lucasgalodoido (21714) 2007-12-28 12:42
cunejo200 (7281) 2007-12-28 13:02
I am clueless when it comes to advanced pp. Just allow me to comment on the end result which is technically and artistically very good. The pp allowed good focus on the statue as well as details on the building. Happy new year! Danilo
Truja (4953) 2007-12-28 13:43

i prefer the BW version. and what a coincidence, i was "desaturating" one foto i took sometime last june in san diego..i still have to breath deeply and get the courage to upload it in the days to come...:-)
feliz ano novo! manigong bagong taon!

Happy 2008 to you, belido!
Nice shot of this monument in such rich colors, with architecture BG to compliment it. Nicely framed lines and contrast. I would prefer the horse not to block the tower behind. Well done. TFS
jmdias (61322) 2007-12-30 11:17
siolaw (38292) 2007-12-31 5:43
An interesting experiment with desaturating and recoloring! It actually came out quite good! Sharpness of details is very good nice framing and POV too.
Have a lucky and happy 2008!
pboehringer (770) 2008-01-01 12:17
nivaldo (15417) 2008-01-01 15:13
uma linda composição, com nitidez maravilhosa! Viva a linda Itália, sim!TFS!
Um abraço, Feliz 2008!

Hmmmm... this view looks pretty familiar to me!
I particularly appreciate the technique you used on this one... it's something I like doing myself once in a while, just like you in an attempt to re-create the atmosphere of those old postcards.
Your results are more than excellent, and they perfectly fit into this great shot of Palazzo Reale. Great job!
Have a nice weekend,
