Near the cathedral of Milan you can find the Galeria Vittorio Emanuele which is a shopping centre constructed in 1865 fine and elegant with a wonderful ceiling made of glass and iron.
In one of the crossings on the floor is this coat of arms that belongs to the House of Savoy. Savoy is a small region between Piedmont, Italy and France. The nobles of this House became Kings of Sardinia (Vittorio Amadeo II, 1720) and Italy (Vittorio Emanuele II, 1861).
The son of this one was King of Spain (Amadeo I) from 1871 to 1873.
The motto of the House is "FERT" which is written here in the circle around the coat of arms. About the meaning of FERT I have found several versions:
- "Foedere Et Religione Tenemur" (We will be kept together by the [constitutional] pact and by religion)
- Fortitudo Eius Rhodum Tenuit" (His [Our Lord's] strengh preserved Rhodes)
- Fides Est Regni Tutela" (Faith is the protection of the kingdom)
- "Foemina Erit Ruina Tua" (Woman will be your ruin)
- "Frappez, Entrez, Rompez Tout" in French (Hit, Ride in, Break Everything)
These two last are a satire. |

This coat of arms reminds me of the Danish flag - Wonder what the connection could be since "Dannebrog" has a history which goes back the 1200..1300-
Thanks Clemente for sharing and for the fine note to explain.
Hola, Clemente. Me gusta mucho la foto y la nota que has escrito sobre ella, sobre todo las diversas interpretaciones sobre el lema "FERT". Es una muy bella imagen con una gran historia detrás.
Gracias por compartirla.
Saludos.
