About the photos

This is the main and only square of Vernazza just as I saw it the first day I arrived there. It’s a small square in front of the sea and, as most of the bars and restaurants are there, it is the social centre of the village and so you can see people there at every hours of the day and night.
When I arrived the sun was almost setting just in front of it and that explains the very warm colours. In the ws I posted the main street of Vernazza as it can be seen getting out of the station. Being the first photos I shot, I thought they could be a good introduction to my trip to Cinque Terre.

The Cinque Terre - Five Villages in Liguria

The Cinque Terre (pronounced CHEEN-kweh TEHR-reh) is the name given to five small villages along the eastern Ligurian coast. Cinque means "five", terre means "lands": Five Lands. The villages from north to south are:

Monterosso, Vernazza , Corniglia , Manarola , Riomaggiore

Four of the five villages are at the bottom of steep hills that run down to the sea. Corniglia sits on a cliff about a thousand feet above the sea. Until the 1960's, these villages were not accessible by road, so they remained isolated. This all changed when the road was built, but the villages still have an "old world" feel. They are very small towns, full of interesting old buildings and narrow pedestrian lanes. Cars are not allowed in most areas of the villages.

You can reach the Cinque Terre easily by car or train. If you are driving, I recommend that you park at one end of the Cinque Terre (either Riomaggiore or Monterosso al Mare) and travel between the towns by foot, train or boat.

Questa è la piazzetta di Vernazza, l’unica, come mi si è presentata al momento del mio arrivo. E’ situata di fronte al mare, e poiché vi si trovano la maggior parte dei bar e ristoranti è il centro sociale del paese e vi si possono trovare persone a tutte le ore del giorno e della notte. Quando sono arrivato il sole stava quasi per tramontare proprio di fronte ad essa dalla parte del mare e questo spiega i colori molto caldi. Nel WS ho messo la strada principale di Vernazza come si vede appena usciti dalla stazione. Dato che sono le prime foto che ho fatto, ho pensato che potevano essere una buona introduzione al mio viaggio alle Cinque terre.

La Regione

Le Cinque Terre rappresentano una delle aree mediterranee naturali e seminaturali più incontaminate e più estese della Liguria; ciò è dovuto a ragioni principalmente storiche e geomorfologiche che hanno impedito una espansione edilizia eccessiva e la costruzione di assi viari principali (che invece percorrono più internamente la Val di Vara). Le attività umane e specialmente la viticoltura, hanno contribuito a creare un paesaggio unico al mondo nel quale lo sviluppo dei tipici "muri a secco" raggiunge complessivamente quello della famosa muraglia cinese. Tutto ciò unitamente alle caratteristiche di un mare cristallino, a testimonianze architettoniche di valore, ad una rete di sentieri tra le più ricche ed invidiabili nelle zone mediterranee, ha reso le Cinque Terre una meta sempre più ambita da turisti italiani e stranieri. Questo non è tanto il risultato di una campagna promozionale ben riuscita quanto un riconoscimento spontaneo dell'unicità di un luogo, della sua bellezza, della piacevolezza che se ne ricava dal soggiornarvi o dal visitarlo...

Ciao Donato ,
Great moog , in this original picture . The POV is well chosen , and the framing is interesting , with the big lantern and the part of the arch in the fore ground . (May be the brown part in the right was not necessary) . I like a lot the soft evening light , too .

Ciao Donato. Salta subito e favorevolemente, all'occhio la cerniera sull'angolo in alto a destra che sorregge il magnifico gioco di luce della successiva scena nonchè la geniale introduzione della lucerna. ottimo DOF.

It has it all, a good composition in vertical format with many nice details to take in, a really lovely evening atmosphere, beautiful and warm colours and good sharpness. a wonderful picture showing the Italian way of life with people relaxing on the terrace and clothes hanging over the window. The terracotta color of the building gives a warm ambiance to the composition and the framing of the scene is good.

Quasi non riconoscevo la mano .... (sai mancan le rocce il mare...). Però devo dire che l'atmosfera di questo tuo primo scatto è di una magia che sensazionale...Uno scatto d'autore, composizione, colori, e sharp assolutamnte perfetti. Sono stupito di come la lanterna si aggiunge a creare un elemento in primo piano che incrementa ulteriormente le bellezza della scenografia (tipo un lume di candela) e di come non crea parti sovraesposte ... è tutto molto ben regolato ed equilibrato, è da incorniciare questa è!

Thanks for this glimpse into Cinque Terre, we will be traveling there this summer. Your composition is fine using the arch to frame the scene. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail. The vertical format works well showing the rising hill and vineyards.

a perfectly heartwarming scene in every respect! these very beautiful rich colours, the composition, the atmosphere, the mood... everything in this photo makes me smile and want to step into the picture to see this beauty with my own eyes.
I like this POV - the photo taken from under the arch (was it an arch?) It also helps to create a very good perspective and depth.
Concerning the WS photo... I don't think this is the case when one can really choose between two absolutely different (in my humble opinion) photos! they are all unique and the WS photo could be posted separately as an "original" :)

You arrived at the perfect time of day to shot this lovely architecture that is so well suited for the tightly cropped vertical format.
The soft light really brings out magnificent details and a nice glow on the old building perched against the steep hills.

Una regione della Liguria che vorrei molto conoscere. Questa fotografia mi dà ancora più desiderio. I colori sono splendidi e mi piace il gioco tra la biancheria e gli imposte. Mi piace anche l'animazione che regna sul terrazzo del caffè. Una scena molto graziosa della vita quotidiana di questa regione dimenticata delle strade e dell'automobile.

finalmente siamo alle Cinqueterre e ci porti subito in quel di Vernazza a prendere un caffè in questa bella piazzetta. I colori li trovo molto naturali, non hai usato "violenza" con saturazione ed aggeggi vari e per questo la trovo un elogio della semplicità e della bella composizione.

I would like to visit places with views like these which really add so much life and interest. The steep hill slope beside this building is a good inclusion of showing the unique location and scenery of this place.

Even the building itself is very interesting architecture with much clothes hanging out to dry and below as a cafe with a crowd. Looks like very cozy from the way you presented this scene.

Damn, Cinque Terre must be the best place on earth!! Well, it is for me!!! I cannot wait to go back there! those mountains with vines and olives and lemons, those colourful walls, the hanging clothes...I can smell the salty sea. I can taste the pasta with walnut sauce (a local speciality) and the gelati. oh, I can't wait to go back!

It's a very difficult choice between the two pictures, I find both pictures very nice.
The picture with the lamp and people calm under the umbrellas.
This gives a nice perspective.
Sharpness and clarity are superb.

The drying clothes capture some attention here!
It is a fine street scene with the people in the cafe enjoying the afternoon and setting sun...
Fine warm colours and I notice the lamp already has been lit, I imagine this is a very pleasant spring evening in Vernazza!

I immediately added this shot to my 'favorites' list because viewing - or rather, experiencing - this scene triggered a flood of memories that I had not relished in several years. I remember dining beneath the yellow and green umbrellas pictured here and watching the sun dip below the sea, completely enchanted by Vernazza's charms. I have seen countless shots of the village since, but none have caused me to reminisce those evenings in Cinque Terre the way this photo has.

Your skill at framing and your impeccable timing take credit here: capturing part of the wall to the right and the lamp hanging from above gives perspective and really throws the viewer right into the scene. The lighting provided by the setting sun against the pastel building as well as the old men chatting on the bench at right brings across the romantic and tranquil feel of the place. This is a masterpiece! Thanks for sharing and congratulations on a spectacular photo.

i missed this perfect one shot.I prefer this one because of is more artistic with the light on lantern to hang from the interior of the arch.I like the colour of the house façade, as in the WS too, and the way that housewife dry their laundry.I'd like to be there to drink a cup of coffee,at the roots of the hill.Well done.

A wonderful photo. Absolutely lovely light captured here, and such rich colours. I love the washing hanging from the windows, and the people enjoying outdoor cafes below. It seems like a delightful town and your photo invites one to visit and join in the daily life. Great work.
